Ragweed pollen extract (RWE) possesses intrinsic NADPH oxidase activity that induces oxidative stress by initiating the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). The ROS are important contributors to the manifestation of allergic inflammation; furthermore, concomitant exposure to an allergen and an endotoxin trigger a stronger inflammatory response. One of the main pro-inflammatory cytokines produced in inflammatory responses is interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and its production is associated with caspase-1-containing inflammasome complexes.

Four of 19 Prunus germplasm accessions hand carried from the Ukraine into the United States without authorization were found to be infected with Plum pox virus (PPV). Of the three isolates characterized, isolates UKR 44189 and UKR 44191 were confirmed to be isolates of PPV strain W, and UKR 44188 was confirmed to be an isolate of PPV strain D. UKR 44189 and UKR 44191 are very closely related to the PPV strain W isolate LV-145bt (HQ670748) from Latvia.

The exact role of the metal ion, usually Mg(2+), in the catalysis of human 3-phosphoglycerate kinase, a well-studied two-domain enzyme, has not been clarified. Here we have prepared single and double alanine mutants of the potential metal-binding residues, D374 and D218. While all mutations weaken the catalytic interactions with Mg(2+), they surprisingly strengthen binding of both MgADP and MgATP, and the effects are even more pronounced for ADP and ATP.

Levels of the selective autophagy substrate p62 have been established in recent years as a specific readout for basal autophagic activity. Here we compared different experimental approaches for using this assay in Drosophila larvae. Similar to the more commonly used western blots, quantifying p62 dots in immunostained fat body cells of L3 stage larvae detected a strong accumulation of endogenous p62 aggregates in null mutants for Atg genes and S6K.

Pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP), a neuropeptide with diverse effects, was originally isolated as a hypothalamo-hypophyseal peptide. Subsequent studies showed highest levels of PACAP in the testis after the brain, suggesting that it influences the development and functioning of spermatozoa. Indeed, it has been proven that PACAP has an effect on spermatogenesis, both locally and via influencing the hypothalamo-hypophyseal-gonadal axis.

Male carriers with balanced reciprocal translocations can produce a variable proportion of unbalanced gametes resulting in reproductive failures. The presence of a structural rearrangement may induce an interchromosomal effect. This is characterized by abnormal bivalents not involved in the reorganization thereby yielding non-disjunction, which would present as aneuploid spermatozoa for these chromosomes.
