Damage-mediated macrophage polarization in sterile inflammation.

Most of the leading causes of death, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, dementia, neurodegenerative diseases, and many more, are associated with sterile inflammation, either as a cause or a consequence of these conditions. The ability to control the progression of inflammation toward tissue resolution before it becomes chronic holds significant clinical potential. During sterile inflammation, the initiation of inflammation occurs through damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) in the absence of pathogen-associated molecules.

The paradoxical role of insight in mental illness: The experience of stigma and shame in schizophrenia, mood disorders, and anxiety disorders.

This study examined the factor structure of the Hungarian version of the Birchwood Insight Scale (BIS) and analyzed its association with socio-demographics, diagnosis, internalized stigma, and shame using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with covariates. Mentally ill patients (N = 200) completed self-report questionnaires. CFA supported a two-factor structure.

Ultrafast high-resolution analysis of human milk oligosaccharides by multicapillary gel electrophoresis.

There is recently growing interest towards synthesized human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) as baby formula additives, and interestingly also as dietary supplements for adults. Currently quite a few manufacturers synthesize HMOs, however, their analysis is challenging, both in resolution and speed. In this paper an ultrafast high-resolution method is introduced for the separation of HMOs by multicapillary gel electrophoresis.

Targeting the problem of treatment non-adherence among mentally ill patients: The impact of loss, grief and stigma.

The present study examined the factor structure of the Hungarian version of the Medication Adherence Rating Scale (MARS) and analyzed its association with socio-demographics, insight, internalized stigma, and the experience of loss and grief as a result of the mental illness diagnosis, using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with a series of one covariates at a time. Mentally ill patients (N=200) completed self-report questionnaires. CFA supported the original three-factor structure although one item was moved from its original factor to another.

Perceived loss among people living with mental disorders: Validation of the personal loss from mental illness scale.

Objective: The development of mental illness often leads to pervasive losses in different areas of people's lives. However, previous research has tended to focus on the loss experienced by families while the examination of the loss experienced by individuals who are themselves coping with mental illness has been neglected. The present study tested the factor structure of the Hungarian version of the Personal Loss from Mental Illness (PLMI) scale, and analyzed its associations with age, gender, previous hospitalizations, marital status, loneliness, grief, and quality of life.

Cryopreservation of gander semen in cryovials - Comparative study.

The aim of the study was to find a practical and inexpensive method for freezing goose semen for use in routine inseminations under farm conditions. Two basic freezing protocols [(1) dynamic, programmable freezing and (2) static, nitrogen vapour method] were evaluated with varying concentrations of dimethylformamide (DMF) plus additional osmoprotectants such as betaine, trehalose, and sucrose, using cryovials as containers. Altogether eight different treatments were compared.

[The cognitive paradigm in the rehabilitation of schizophrenia - focusing on cognitive remediation].

Neurocognitive deficits are core features of schizophrenia and well known to the specialists, concerning researches in Hungary as well. Significance of the topic derives from the fact that according to our present knowledge this is the prime symptom principally affecting everyday functioning and limits benefit of rehabilitation opportunities. The classic psychiatric rehabilitation toolset, either pharmacological or psychosocial, does not provide effective and specific assistance to alleviate the symptoms of the neurocognitive deficits.

Effect of sex ratios, spiking and extra artificial insemination on the breeding efficiency of broiler breeders.

Since early fertility decline is a permanent problem of broiler breeders, the aim of this study was to test the effects of various sex ratios, spiking strategies and additional artificial inseminations (AI) on their breeding efficiency. Six breeder flocks were analysed during the whole reproduction cycle. In Flock A the sex ratio was maintained at 10% during the whole cycle (control), while in Flock B the number of males was increased to a final ratio of 16%.

Preliminary results of the application of gonadal tissue transfer in various chicken breeds in the poultry gene conservation.

The aim of the study was to devise a technique to allow transfer of ovarian and testicular tissues obtained from one day old chicks to recipient animals. The following combinations of chicken breeds were used: Tetra SL/Tetra SL, Tetra SL/Harco, Tetra SL/Black Transylvanian Naked Neck, Godollo New Hampshire/Speckled Transylvanian Naked Neck (recipient/donor), respectively. Only animals less than 24h old from hatching were used as either recipient or donor.

Methods for cryopreservation of guinea fowl sperm.

Conservation of indigenous poultry species is an important part of the new Hungarian agricultural strategy. Semen cryopreservation is the most practical method for the long term storage of poultry genetic material. The objective was to compare four protocols for cryopreservation of guinea fowl sperm (slow and fast programmable, freezing in nitrogen vapor, and pellet) and three cryoprotectants (10% ethylene glycol, 6% dimethyl-formamide and 6% dimethyl-acetamide).

Vitrification of early avian blastodermal cells with a new type of cryocontainer.

Although cryopreservation of avian semen is only applicable for singlegene traits, cryopreservation of avian blastodermal cells could facilitate preservation of the entire genome of endangered or rare-breed poultry. Slow freezing methods result in acceptable survival rates; however, there are apparently no reports regarding the use of vitrification. The aim of the study was to establish methods for chicken embryonic cell vitrification, including development of a container which supported cryopreservation of large numbers of cells (to increase the probability of chimera production).

Variation in fruit juice consumption among infants and toddlers: associations with WIC participation.

Objectives: Juice is a common component of a child's diet. Excessive juice consumption may lead to adverse nutritional and dental outcomes. The objective of the study was to evaluate consumption patterns and parental perception regarding juice in a sample of children from families participating or not participating in Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) services.

Effect of testosterone loading on the kinetic of faecal testosterone excretion in mallards.

Intestinal passage time of coloured fodder and testosterone turnover were examined by faecal steroid analysis in mallards in the reproductive and postrefractory period. In the latter, the discharge of coloured fodder began 36 minutes after ingestion in males, and 56 minutes in females. During reproduction the discharge began 93 minutes and 112 minutes after ingestion in males and females, respectively.

Improving the reproductive efficiency by zoo-technical methods at a dairy farm.

This trial was conducted on a Hungarian dairy farm between July 2001 and December 2004. The objective of this work was to improve the reproductive efficiency with relatively high milk production. At the beginning of this trial blood and fodder samples were taken for checking the metabolic status of the animals in order to determine their health condition.

Sex differences in endocrine and psychological responses to psychosocial stress in healthy elderly subjects and the impact of a 2-week dehydroepiandrosterone treatment.

Evidence from animal as well as human studies has suggested that significant sex differences exist in hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) activity. As gonadal steroids could be important modulators of HPA sex differences, stress responses were investigated in subjects of advanced age after dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) or placebo treatment. After a 2-week treatment with 50 mg DHEA daily or placebo, 75 men and women (mean age, 67.

Psychoneuroimmunological correlates of persisting sciatic pain in patients who underwent discectomy.

Patients suffering from persisting sciatic pain 8 weeks following discectomy were compared with patients displaying low complaints and healthy, pain-free volunteers regarding their interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels, morning cortisol levels and degree of psychological distress. Whereas serum concentrations of IL-6 were measured by collecting blood samples between 0945 and 2400 h in intervals of 45 min, morning cortisol levels were obtained by sampling saliva on five ensuing measurements, beginning immediately after awakening. In addition, questionnaires aimed at measuring depressive mood, somatic symptoms, coping and chronic stress were filled out by the subjects.

Grandmaternal age at birth of parents of children with trisomy 21.

The authors investigated the age of the parents and grandmothers of 262 children with simple trisomy 21. In cases in which the mother was under 30, the mean grandmaternal age was higher than that of the controls. This might mean that some of these cases, being the children of old mothers, began their lives as trisomic zygotes.

[Comparative considerations on incidence of malignant neoplasms in the United States (White) 1969-1971 and in the German Democratic Republic 1971 (author's transl)].

An analysis of the incidence of malignant neoplasms in the GDR 1971 as compared with the United States 1969-1971 shows that in the USA, incidence of total cancer and of several individual sites is significantly higher than in the GDR. Possible reasons for this observation are discussed. The much higher incidence of nearly all malignant neoplasms in high age in the USA raises suspicion that cancer registration in the GDR for these age groups is incomplete.
