Uterine vascular alterations take place in pyometra bitches speculatively influenced by prostaglandin and nitric oxide pathways. However, no causative effect of nitric oxide on endometrial vascularization was proved elsewhere for medically treated pyometra bitches. This study aimed to identify the main in situ uterine artery vasodilation pathway in pyometra bitches medically treated with antigestagen solely or coupled with prostaglandin.

In premature births, deficiency and/or inactivation of surfactant and incomplete development of lung occur, leading to pulmonary complications and greater need for ventilatory interventions. Prenatal corticosteroid therapy is used to improve neonatal lung function and, thus, may reduce mortality and lower incidence and severity of lung injury. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the need for ventilatory support in preterm lambs subjected or not to prenatal betamethasone treatment, and to evaluate the effectiveness on neonatal survival.

The success of immediate adaptation to extrauterine life depends on appropriate lung function, however, elective cesarean section can increase the risk of respiratory distress as a result of reduced pulmonary fluid absorption. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of birth mode on pulmonary clearance and respiratory performance of canine neonates in the transition period. For this purpose, 37 neonates were selected according to the obstetric condition: Vaginal Eutocia (n = 17) and Elective C-section (n = 20).

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a pathological condition that directly interferes with the reproductive potential of senile dogs, by leading to prostate enlargement and sperm injury, which in turn may compromise sperm freezeability. Moreover, albeit finasteride treatment reduces prostatic volume and blood supply and maintains seminal quality and testicular integrity, the effects of sperm samples submitted to cryopreservation after the finasteride treatment are still unknown. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate frozen-thawed semen of BPH dogs, as well as dogs subjected to BPH pharmacological treatment with finasteride.

Challenges of the extrauterine environment can be life threatening for a premature fetus with inadequate fetal maturity. Maternal corticosteroids therapy is widely employed to induce fetal pulmonary maturation. Nevertheless, whenever therapeutic pregnancy interruption has to be performed in a time manner insufficient to treat the dam, postnatal corticotherapy can be considered an alternative.

Senescence leads to deleterious effects in testicular function, sperm quality and fertility in dogs. There, however, are no consistent results of vascular changes in the testes and epididymis during natural ageing in dogs. The aim of this study, therefore, was to compare testes and epididymis blood flow, biometry and echodensity between young and senile dogs.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a disorder related to hormone imbalance, local angiogenesis, and prostate growth, which can be treated surgically (orchiectomy) or medically (most commonly with finasteride). However, finasteride therapy is not completely established in dogs regarding local action and posology. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different doses of finasteride and orchiectomy on hormonal profile, prostate apoptosis, blood flow, and biometry in dogs with BPH.

Article Synopsis
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common reproductive disorder in older dogs, and treatments like orchiectomy and finasteride aim to alleviate symptoms and reduce prostate size.
  • A study assessed the effects of BPH and short-term finasteride therapy on various parameters in dogs, using groups that were either affected by BPH or not, with and without finasteride treatment.
  • Results showed that while BPH led to hormonal changes and affected sperm quality, short-term finasteride treatment helped lower certain hormone levels and improved testicular blood flow without harming semen quality, indicating its potential as a therapeutic option for BPH in dogs.

Background: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the most common reproductive disorders in both male dogs and men. Finasteride, a synthetic inhibitor of the enzyme 5α-reductase, is widely used as medical treatment. Although sperm can be affected by both BPH and finasteride treatment, the direct influence on DNA integrity remains unclear.

The decision on how and when to assist whelping is crucial for the survival rate of puppies and health status of the dam. However, medical or surgical therapy in dystocia can impact both maternal and neonatal stress and glucose response differently. This study aims to compare perinatal cortisol and glucose among different modes of delivery in bitches and neonates.

Among prematurity complications, the most important disorder is structural immaturity and inadequate production of pulmonary surfactant. Betamethasone is the drug of choice to artificially improve pulmonary capacity, thus we aimed to verify the effect of prenatal maternal treatment on lung development of premature puppies. Pregnant bitches were allocated in Term Group (n = 7), Preterm-Treated Group (interrupted pregnancies with maternal administration of betamethasone; n = 7), Preterm-Control Group (untreated interrupted pregnancies; n = 7), Extremely-Preterm Group (interrupted pregnancies at 55d; n = 6).

Ultrasonographic examination of pregnant ewes can enable the identification of perinatal abnormalities and establish prenatal assistance responsible for minimizing morbidity and perinatal mortality. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the feasibility of a fetal biometric analysis by ultrasonography to predict neonatal vitality and lamb growth during the first month of life. A longitudinal study was conducted with 13 healthy ewes, subjected to ultrasonographic examination every 15 days from 60 day of pregnancy until lambing, evaluating thoracic diameter, abdominal diameter, biparietal diameter, humerus, femur and placentome length.

Neonatal immediate adaptation to extrauterine life depends mainly on adequate lung function, which is under the influence of previous fetal maturation and obstetrical condition, both acting to stimulate the efficient liquid removal from the pulmonary parenchyma during the immediate transition period. The objective of the present study is to identify chest radiographic changes of neonatal calves born under the influence of different duration of calving and obstetric assistance and correlate with clinical analysis and blood acid-base balance. Experimental groups were determined according to the duration of calving: 2 h (n  =  16), 2-4 h (n  =  16) and >4 h (n  =  12), and additionally by two sub-groups: no-intervention calving (n  =  22) and intervention calving (n  =  22).
