Sediment cores from 47 inland lakes in Michigan, USA were used to assess spatial and temporal trends in loadings of mercury (Hg). Focusing/background corrected accumulation rates and inventories and peak concentrations were used to examine: 1) responses of loadings to post-1990 reductions in emissions, 2) if spatial trends are consistent with modeled Hg deposition and 3) evidence for local and distal inputs. Results showed that decreases in concentrations and anthropogenic accumulation rates of Hg were consistent with recent reductions in emissions of Hg.

Nanosized BaFeCuO powders were prepared using the Pechini method. To limit grain growth and agglomeration, the temperature of calcination was limited to 800 °C. For all samples, the cubic form of BaFeO was predominant with minor additional phases.

Oxide diffusion was studied in two innovative SOFC cathode materials, Ba(2)Co(9)O(14) and Ca(3)Co(4)O(9)+δ derivatives. Although oxygen diffusion was confirmed in the promising material Ba(2)Co(9)O(14), it was not possible to derive accurate transport parameters because of an oxidation process at the sample surface which has still to be clarified. In contrast, oxygen diffusion in the well-known Ca(3)Co(4)O(9)+δ thermoelectric material was improved when calcium was partly substituted with strontium, likely due to an increase of the volume of the rock salt layers in which the conduction process takes place.

A 34-year-old woman with pulmonary and ganglionary sarcoidosis developed a nephritic syndrome. The renal biopsy demonstrated a type-1 membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis. Clinical and histological remission of the renal disease following indomethacin treatment was associated with the remission of sarcoidosis.

[Pulp protectors and the deep regions of the cavity].

Rev Stomatol Chir Maxillofac

August 1984

Increasing emphasis is being placed on the use of agents for protection of the pulp and the deep regions of the pulp cavity, modern conservative dentistry attempting as far as possible to conserve pulp vitality. The aim of this report is to assist the dental practitioner in his choice of the different varnishes and cements marketed by dental product manufacturers, to ensure the maximum of benefits for patients' teeth.

[Pitfalls in restorative dentistry].

Rev Stomatol Chir Maxillofac

July 1984

The first part of this report contains data on the pitfalls which may be encountered during the diagnosis of conditions for which reconstructive dentistry is applicable: dental caries, pulpitis, pulpo -arthritis, desmodontitis . The second part enumerates possible pitfalls during reconstructive dental surgery: anesthesia, arsenical dressings, use of canal pins and of ozone, canal obturation and its immediate consequences, nerve root artefacts and sections under anesthesia, apical cysts, caries obturation.

An Algerien patient aged 31 years with a histologically confirmed mediastinopulmonary sarcoidosis had a persistent stable miliary pulmonary x-ray image after cortisone therapy. Eighteen months after stopping the corticotherapy, he developed cryptococcosis which was mainly cutaneous, but associated with subcutaneous abscesses and peripheral adenopathy, and without lesions in the viscera or deep nodes. Cryptococcus antigens were present in the serum and there was a humoral and cellular immunity reaction towards the cryptococcus.

From 5 cases of partial anomalous pulmonary venous drainage of the left lung into the innominate vein, it has been thought of interest to situate this type of venous anomaly among the partial anomalous pulmonary venous drainage classification. It is revealed in 2 different ways. In adults, this malformation sets the problem of the diagnosis of an abnormal chest Xray, without symptom.

Cystic lymphangioma localized only in the mediastinum is a rare type of primitive tumour (less than 1% of the mediastinum primitive tumours). These three new observations concern lymphangiomas with an anterior position ; therir anatomical connections with the lymphatic system are difficult to show. Treated by surgery these benign tumours have a good prognosis and only a few cases of local recurrences have been reported.

The authors report a case of left-sided abnormal partial pulmonary venous return. This abnormality was discovered following weight loss with a strongly positive tuberculin skin test. A plain chest X-ray showed an externally convex opacity filling the aortico-pulmonary space, suggestive of a lymphadenopathy in that area.

The authors present their still limited experience of embolization of systemic arteries as the treatment of hemoptysis. Their cases illustrate the indications, contra-indications, causes of failure and effectiveness of this therapeutic method in pneumology. They had to refuse who patients: in the first, the pathological bronchial artery arose from a common trunk with the intercostal which gave rise to an anterior spinal artery.

The authors present the results of selective bronchial and parietal arteriography of pulmonary systemic hypervascularization, in 83 cases. They emphasize the advantages of previous pulmonary venous angiography and overall aortography for the success of selective injections. Failures are evaluated at 6 to 7%.
