Introduction: Lactoferrin (Lf) is an important immunomodulator in infections caused by different agents. During SARS-CoV-2 infection, Lf can hinder or prevent virus access to the intracellular environment. Severe cases of COVID-19 are related to increased production of cytokines, accompanied by a weak type 1 interferon response.

The 7-chloro-4-(phenylselanyl) quinoline (4-PSQ) shows promise for its antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory properties. Here, we explored the structure-activity relationship of 4-PSQ and its analogues: 7-chloro-4-[(4-fluorophenyl) selanyl]quinoline (a), 7-chloro-4-{[3-trifluoromethyl)phenyl] selanyl} quinoline (b), 4-((3,5-Bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl) selanyl-7-chloroquinoline (c), 7-chloro-4-[(2,4,6-trimethyl)selanyl]quinolinic acid (d) and 7-chloroquinoline-4-selenium acid (e) in models of acute inflammation and chemical, thermal and mechanical nociception in mice, alongside in silico analysis. Compounds a (-F), b (-CF), c (-Bis-CF), d (-CH), e (-OOH), and 4-PSQ exhibited antinociceptive effects in chemical and thermal nociception models, except d (-CH) and e (-OOH) in the hot plate test.

Article Synopsis
  • - Goiter, or enlargement of the thyroid gland, was observed in Brazilian basslets, a type of marine ornamental fish, in a research laboratory from 2016 to 2023, showing signs of tumor-like growths affecting feeding and respiration.
  • - Around 20 adult fish developed these growths in the pharyngeal cavity and gill arches, resulting in severe health issues and eventual death within months after the growth appeared.
  • - Histological analysis showed significant changes in thyroid cells, marking the first report of goiter in this species, and researchers recommend maintaining low nitrate levels and regular monitoring of iodine in water until more is known about the condition.

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) is a European Union regulation that aims to protect human health and the environment from the risks posed by chemicals. Article 25 clearly states that: "[i]n order to avoid animal testing, testing on vertebrate animals for the purposes of this Regulation shall be undertaken only as a last resort." In practice, however, the standard information requirements under REACH are still primarily filled using animal studies.

The EU chemical strategy for sustainability (CSS) plans to use chemical grouping to "prioritise (…) substances for restrictions for all uses through grouping, instead of regulating them one by one". Thus, toxicological grouping will become a key tool used by regulatory authorities in Europe. Over the last 2 years, ECHA has published a high number of documents labelled "Assessment of Regulatory Needs (ARN)" which are based on groups of chemicals based on structural considerations.

Introduction: Cutaneous defects involving the frontal region and anterior hairline of the scalp can result from congenital or acquired conditions. The negative esthetic impact can cause disturbances in the psychic and social sphere of the patient, causing problems in interpersonal relationships and in the body image itself. The use of skin expanders is usually effective in this region due to the bone base providing support and stability for its use.

Introduction: Many procedures are performed on the scalp, such as excision of pilar and sebaceous cysts, melanocytic nevi, and reduction surgery for scarring alopecia, among others. In hair transplants, telogen effluvium is often reported 3 months after surgery; however, hair loss usually happens much earlier, around second week after the procedure, not compatible with the time required for hair to enter telogen and exogenous phases in normal conditions.

Case Reports: We report 3 cases of anagen hair loss 4 weeks after surgeries, with perilesional trichoscopy suggesting anagen effluvium, with typical signs such as black dots and exclamation hairs.
