As the population ages, it is essential that professionals across disciplines have experience and competence working with older adults. Though experiential learning opportunities have been extensively documented as a tool to accomplish this goal, student engagement in gerontology research has not been examined in detail. This participatory case study highlights the perspectives of undergraduate student researchers involved in a hands-on pilot research study that explored connections between cognitive, physical, and everyday function in midlife and older adults while testing the feasibility of a mobile app for early detection of cognitive decline related to Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

Introduction: Long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotic medications can help improve treatment adherence in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Despite this, they are underutilized. In 2003, intramuscular risperidone became the first available LAI atypical antipsychotic medication, and since then, a number of competing long-acting risperidone formulations have been brought to market, with additional options under active development.

Background: Cancer Research UK ran a mass-media campaign for 6 weeks from Sept 1, 2022, to Sept 13, 2022, targeted to people aged 50 years and older and from a lower social-grade (C2DE) in Northern Ireland. The campaign was developed to target barriers to help-seeking for the target audience. With this evaluation, we aimed to compare reported barriers and self-reported help-seeking before and after the campaign to assess changes potentially related to the campaign.

Article Synopsis
  • The Omega-3 Index (O3I) measures the levels of important fatty acids EPA and DHA in red blood cells, linked to various health benefits, but is not widely used for monitoring.
  • In a study with 88 participants, researchers explored using urine samples to track changes in O3I after 12 weeks of supplementation with either olive oil (as a control), EPA, or DHA.
  • They discovered a potential new urinary biomarker, CPCA, that significantly increased with EPA and DHA and could effectively differentiate between supplementation groups, suggesting a new non-invasive way to assess omega-3 status.

Introduction: The discovery of biogenic aldehydes in the postmortem parkinsonian brain and the ability of these aldehydes to modify and cross-link proteins has called attention to their possible role in Parkinson's disease. For example, many in vitro studies have found that the aldehyde metabolite of dopamine, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetaldehyde (DOPAL), induces the formation of stable, neurotoxic alpha-synuclein oligomers.

Methods: To study this in vivo, mice deficient in the two aldehyde dehydrogenase enzymes (Aldh1a1 and Aldh2, DKO) primarily responsible for detoxification of DOPAL in the nigrostriatal pathway were crossed with mice that overexpress human wild-type alpha-synuclein.

: College students experience stressors that can increase the risk for mental health concerns and negatively impact retention rates. It is crucial for practitioners working on college campuses to find creative ways to meet the needs of their students and cultivate a campus culture that is dedicated to bolstering mental health. The purpose of this study was to explore if implementing 1-h mental health workshops covering stress management, wellness, mindfulness, and SMART goals was feasible and advantageous for students.

Pit building antlions Euroleon nostras have been submitted to artificial cues in order to delineate their faculty to localize a prey. Series of propagating pulses in sand have been created from an extended source made of 10 piezoelectric transducers equally spaced on a line and located at a large distance from the pit. The envelope of each pulse encompasses six oscillations at a carrier frequency of 1250 Hz and up to eight oscillations at 1666 Hz.

Background: In-hospital deterioration among ward patients is associated with substantially increased adverse outcome rates. In 2013 Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC) developed and implemented a predictive analytics-driven program, Advance Alert Monitor (AAM), to improve early detection and intervention for in-hospital deterioration. The AAM predictive model is designed to give clinicians 12 hours of lead time before clinical deterioration, permitting early detection and a patient goals-concordant response to prevent worsening.

Neuroimaging is typically perceived as a resource demanding discipline. While this is the case in certain circumstances, institutions with limited resources have historically contributed significantly to the field of neuroscience, including neuroimaging. In the study of self-deception, we have successfully employed single-pulse TMS to determine the brain correlates of abilities including overclaiming and self-enhancement.

The cardiac response to endurance exercise has been studied previously, and recent reports have described the extension of this remodeling to the pulmonary vasculature. However, these reports have focused primarily on land-based sports and few data are available on exercise-induced cardio-pulmonary adaptation in swimming. Nor has the impact of sex on this exercise-induced cardio-pulmonary remodeling been studied in depth.

Background: Inadequate osteoporosis education can make patients ill-informed concerning preventive and therapeutic interventions and creates misconceptions and unnecessary concerns about the disease.

Aim: Our study aimed to assess whether patients referred to the DXA exam by their general practitioner are informed about risk factors for osteoporosis, comparing patients who received a diagnosis of osteoporosis before the exam with those without this diagnosis.

Methods: An observational single-center study was performed among patients who were referred to the DXA exam at the Osteoporosis Service of Marche Nord Hospital (Fano, Italy) between April and July 2019.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic, idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by dysregulation of colon immune response. Curcumin (Cur) has strong anti-inflammatory activities, but the application is severely hindered by the extremely hydrophobicity and pitiful bioavailability. Alginate (Alg), a natural polysaccharide with ideal solubility and biosafety, was introduced to prepare the esterified alginate-curcumin conjugate (Alg-Cur) and constructed stable Alg-Cur micelle in physiological solutions.

The outbreak of new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has quickly spread all over the world. Real time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) for nucleic acid detection has become the standard method for clinical diagnosis of COVID-19 infection. But these rRT-PCR tests have many inherent limitations, and carry a high false negative rate.

The antlion larvae (Myrmeleontidae) are ambush predators. They detect substrate-borne vibrations induced by the movement of the prey. European pit-building antlions (Myrmeleon inconspicuus) are studied for their ability to perceive vibrations generated by the locomotion of an ant (Cataglyphis cursor) outside the pit.

: High-intensity training has been associated with bi-ventricular and bi-atrial remodelling and a potentially increased risk of arrhythmias. Most of the evidence is based on endurance disciplines mainly involving the lower part of the body, while few data is available on upper body disciplines. The purpose of this study was to compare chronic cardiac remodelling induced by running and swimming as well as the acute response of ventricular and atrial performance after an upper-body and a lower-body endurance race.

Purpose/aims: Development and implementation of a predictive analytic scoring system in a system of 21 hospitals required 24-hour surveillance to ensure alerts were responded and acted upon. Identification of gaps in patient care created an opportunity to innovate and develop a team to integrate both workflows.

Description Of Project/program: A Virtual Nurse team of master's degree-prepared nurses with backgrounds in intensive care and management led by a clinical nurse specialist work remotely from their homes.

A pressure-based protocol for differential extraction has been optimized to provide a rapid and selective alternative to conventional differential extraction techniques with the advantage of an increased recovery of genomic DNA. The protocol involves treating cotton swabs containing mixtures of sperm and vaginal epithelial cells with two sets of pressure treatment using a Barocycler® NEP 2320 in alkaline conditions. This first step quantitatively and selectively removes female epithelial cells.

Waterlogging decreases a plant's metabolism, stomatal conductance (gs) and photosynthetic rate (A); however, some evergreen species show acclimation to waterlogging. By studying both the physiological and morphological responses to waterlogging, the objective of this study was to assess the acclimation capacity of four swamp forest species that reside in different microhabitats. We proposed that species (Luma apiculata [D.
