Commissioning a clinical proton pencil beam scanning beamline for pre-clinical ultra-high dose rate irradiations on a cyclotron-based system.

Background: This manuscript describes modifications to a pencil beam scanning (PBS) proton gantry that enables ultra-high dose rates (UHDR) irradiation, including treatment planning and validation.

Methods: Beamline modifications consisted of opening the energy slits and setting the degrader to pass-through mode to maximize the dose rate. A range shifter was inserted upstream from the isocenter to enlarge the spot size and make it rotationally symmetric.

Triage: A Global Perspective.

Triage is a process by which patients are assessed, classified, and sorted based on their presenting complaint and clinical urgency, providing assurance for timely access to emergency care. The goal is to get the right person to the right place, in the right amount of time, for the right reason, and within the context of resource availability. In many countries, a standardized triage system, underpinned through the use of guidelines, is used to provide clinicians with support and guidance.

Emergency department nurse call back: A quality improvement project.

Background: Early detection of clinical deterioration after discharge from the Emergency Department may facilitate timely intervention and improve patient outcomes.

Methods: A quality improvement project to evaluate nurse call back offered to all patients within 72 h of discharge to community (usual residence) from an Emergency Department. All patients of all ages that were assessed, managed by a physician and discharged to their home from an Emergency Department were eligible.

Future Emergency Nursing Workforce: What the Evidence Is Telling Us.

Introduction: In Australia, on any given day, there are more than 300 advertised emergency nursing positions, and this situation can be replicated in nearly every country internationally. The nursing shortage globally is known. The importance of not only why nurses specialize in the field of emergency nursing but also why they remain in the field requires an understanding of the evidence and research into nursing recruitment and retention.
