Article Synopsis
  • Sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea and restless legs syndrome are common in both the general population and patients with chronic diseases, particularly multiple sclerosis (MS).
  • A study compared sleep-related issues, fatigue, and depression levels among adult MS patients with a group of residents from São Paulo, finding that the general population reported worse sleep quality and more daytime sleepiness.
  • Results indicated that while both groups shared similar chronotypes, MS patients treated with disease-modifying drugs had fewer sleep complaints but experienced higher fatigue levels, suggesting potential benefits from their treatment regimen.

Background: Progressive systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a connective tissue disease characterized by endothelial lesions and fibrosis of the skin and other organs. Patients' quality of life and life expectancy are determined by the intensity of pulmonary, esophageal, cardiac, and renal involvement. Neurological involvement was considered to be rare, but increasing evidence indicates that peripheral and autonomic neuropathies commonly occur.
