View Article and Find Full Text PDFComplex plasma mixtures with three or more components are often encountered in astrophysics or in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments. For mixtures containing species with large differences in atomic number Z, the modeling needs to consider at the same time the kinetic theory for low-Z elements combined with the theory of strongly coupled plasma for high-Z elements, as well as all the intermediate situations that can appear in multicomponent systems. For such cases, we study the pair distribution functions, self-diffusions, mutual diffusion, and viscosity for ternary mixtures at extreme conditions.

The interaction of a strong flux of photons with matter through an ionizing front (I-front) is an ubiquitous phenomenon in the context of astrophysics and inertial confinement fusion (ICF) where intense sources of radiation put matter into motion. When the opacity of the irradiated material varies continuously in the radiation spectral domain, only one single I-front is formed. In contrast, as numerical simulations tend to show, when the opacity of the irradiated material presents a sharp edge in the radiation spectral domain, a second I-front (an edge front) can form.

Stereolithography has been used to design the membrane supports which initially materialize the gaseous interface. The visualizations of both heavy-light and light-heavy sinusoidal interfaces were carried out with laser sheet diagnostics.

Experiments were performed on the OMEGA laser and are the first use of rugby hohlraums for ICF studies. Analysis of experimental data shows that the hohlraum energetics is well understood.
