This study aimed to investigate the kinetics of dietary GSH in the gastrointestinal tract and the effect of GSH on the intestinal redox status of weaned piglets. Forty-eight piglets with an average age of 26 days and an average body weight of 7.7 kg were used in this study.

Background: Weaning is a critical phase in the pigs' life and gut health might be compromised. Gluconic acid was shown to be poorly absorbed but readily fermented to butyrate in the gut which in turn can improve gut function. Hence, a total of 144 weaning pigs were fed the experimental diets for 42 days.

Introducing hyperprolific sows has led to proportionally more (very) low birth weight ((V)LBW) piglets, accompanied by higher mortality. To improve the survival of (V)LBW piglets, drenching a dense milk replacer (DMR) could be applied. A first experiment evaluated the effect of drenching DMR (1 or 3 doses within 24 h after birth) to LBW ((mean litter birth weight - 1*SD) and weighing between 1 kg and 750 g) and VLBW piglets ((mean litter birth weight - 1.

Article Synopsis
  • MSM (Methyl sulfonyl methane) is a dietary supplement linked to various health benefits, particularly in reducing oxidative stress, which is an issue for poultry under heat stress (HS).
  • In a study with Ross 308 broilers, dietary MSM (at 1 and 2 g/kg) improved growth performance and lower feed-to-gain ratio during the grower phase, but did not significantly impact performance during the finisher phase.
  • MSM supplementation during HS helped lower rectal temperatures and panting frequency, reduced mortality, and improved antioxidant levels in the birds, indicating its potential to enhance heat tolerance and overall health in poultry.

Background: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a lifelong disease for which outcomes may be influenced by patients' self-care knowledge. Therapeutic education (TPE) is a patient-centered teaching instrument based on patient's adaptative processes and needs. TPE was developed in the Paris area by a pediatric health network using interactive face-to-face meetings.

The introduction of hyperprolific sows has resulted in more low birth weight (LBW) piglets, accompanied by higher mortality. A possible strategy to enhance the resilience and survival of LBW piglets is oral supplementation (drenching) of bioactive substances. This study evaluated the supplementation of bovine colostrum, short-chain fructo-oligosaccharides (scFOS) or quercetin that were dissolved separately in a milk replacer.

Introduction: TCAs and paroxetine, a SSRI, are associated with safety risks in geriatric patients because of anticholinergic properties. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the impact of a clinical decision-support tool (CDST) on adherence with medication prescribing and practice guidance to enhance patient safety.

Methods: Mental health clinical pharmacy specialists and clinical pharmacy leadership led a multidisciplinary creation and integration of a CDST within a Veterans Health Administration EHR.

The increase in litter sizes in recent years has resulted in more low birth weight (LBW) piglets, accompanied by a higher mortality. A potential intervention to overcome this is drenching bioactive substances. However, if the act of drenching provokes additional stress in LBW piglets, it might counteract the supplement's effect and be detrimental for the piglet's survival.

Background: Drug product shortages, including injectable opioids, are common and have the potential to adversely affect patient care.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of an injectable opioid shortage for hospitalized adult patients in the acute postoperative setting.

Methods: A single-center, retrospective cohort study of noncritically ill hospitalized, postoperative patients requiring opioids for acute pain management was conducted.

Bacterial folliculitis, rosacea, and other common skin conditions have been linked to infestation by Demodex mites (human demodicosis). Currently, there is little guidance for treatment of inflammatory conditions associated with demodicosis. Thus, the objective of this review is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of treatments utilized for Demodex infestation.

Public health campaigns encourage people to protect themselves against skin cancer by using sunscreens and taking other protective measures. The objective is to estimate the impact of these campaigns on the rise of awareness among the general public. This study explores the prevalence and predictors of solar protection behaviour in a sample of beachgoers and compares these results to another similar study carried out 9 years earlier (i.

Objectives: The present study evaluated the effect of phosphorylcholine (PC) immunization on the extent of experimental atherosclerosis.

Background: Immunization against oxidized lipoprotein (oxLDL) or Streptococcus pneumoconiae reduces atherosclerosis. Phosphorylcholine is the main epitope recognized by both antipneumococcus and anti-oxLDL antibodies.

Strategies aimed at treating atherosclerosis by immunization protocols are emerging. Such protocols commonly use adjuvants as non-specific stimulators of immune responses. However, adjuvants are known to modify various disease processes.

The work on the development of the regional health education plan (SREPS) in the Nord/Pas-de-Calais region has been analysed and viewed in the light of the specific regional context. A number of statements can now be made on this work, as it underlines the expectations of the different health education professionals. The article testifies to the fact that the implementation of the SREPS, through its dynamic approach, contributes to the creation and reinforcement of a common culture while uncovering the road which remains left to travel.

In patients with clinical symptoms of coronary atherosclerosis, T cells are activated and directed to autologous proteins contained in the active plaques, suggesting that autoimmune responses may play a role in atherosclerosis progression. Organ-specific autoimmune diseases are sometimes accompanied by broad alterations of serum autoreactive antibody repertoires. We thus investigated antibody repertoires at a global level, using a technique of immunoblotting that allows for the quantitative screening of antibody reactivities in complex antibody mixtures toward a large panel of antigens derived from homologous tissue extracts, followed by multiparametric statistical analysis of the data.
