The endothelial sodium channel (EnNaC) plays an important role in regulating vessel stiffness. Here, we investigated the regulation of EnNaC in mouse aortic endothelial cells (mAoEC) by the actin cytoskeleton and lipid raft association protein myristoylated alanine-rich C-kinase substrate like protein 1 (MLP1). We hypothesized that mutation of specific amino acid residues within the effector domain of MLP1 or loss of association between MLP1 and the anionic phospholipid phosphate PIP2 would significantly alter membrane association and EnNaC activity in mAoEC.

2-Methyl-1-butanol (2MB) and 3-Methyl-1-butanol (3MB) are microbial volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and found in indoor air. Here, we applied rice as a bioindicator to investigate the effects of these indoor microbial volatile pollutants. In this study, we fabricated a composite of NiO-ZnO/PANI-CNTs on a fluorine tin oxide (FTO) electrode and examined the electrochemical sensing behavior of the modified electrode to detect methanol in aqueous solution. The structural, morphological, and electrochemical properties of the composite were characterized using various methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), EDS, FTIR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and electrochemical techniques such as cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA). The composite-based electrode showed excellent electrocatalytic activity and selectivity for methanol oxidation.

Autophagy is upregulated in response to metabolic stress, a hypoxic tumor microenvironment, and therapeutic stress in various cancers and mediates tumor progression and resistance to cancer therapy. Herein, we identified a cinchona alkaloid derivative containing urea (), which exhibited potential cytotoxicity and inhibited autophagy in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells. We showed that not only induced apoptosis but also blocked autophagy in HCC cells, as indicated by the increased expression of LC3-II and p62, inhibition of autophagosome-lysosome fusion, and suppression of the Akt/mTOR/S6k pathway in the HCC cells.

Single-molecule imaging of the entrance of a protein into the hydrophobic environment of a cell membrane was investigated. The pre-stem of LukF, one of the two components of the pore-forming toxin staphylococcal gamma-hemolysin, was specifically labeled with 6-bromoacetyl-2-dimethylaminonaphthalene (Badan), an environment-sensitive fluorophore. Incubation of this derivative with erythrocyte ghost membranes resulted in a pronounced increase in fluorescence indicating insertion of Badan into the hydrophobic interior of the lipid bilayers.
