In Vietnamese culture, bamboo holds deep symbolic significance. However, in recent years, as a result of evolving usage patterns and the introduction of alternative materials in the face of a rapidly developing modern market economy, industrialisation, and urbanisation, bamboo's economic and social value has dwindled. Nevertheless, with the pressing challenges of climate change, environmental pollution, and the depletion of natural resources, bamboo is experiencing a resurgence in importance within the lives of Vietnamese people.

The proliferation of genomic sequencing approaches has significantly impacted the field of phylogenetics. Target capture approaches provide a cost-effective, fast and easily applied strategy for phylogenetic inference of non-model organisms. However, several existing target capture processing pipelines are incapable of incorporating whole genome sequencing (WGS).

Fossils provide important insight into our understanding of phylogenetic history by serving as calibration points for divergence time estimation. However, uncertainties in the fossil record due to parallel evolution and convergent evolution can critically affect estimates of node ages. Here, we compare and contrast estimates of phylogenetic divergence with geologic and fossil history for two freshwater snail genera of the family Viviparidae in East Asia (Cipangopaludina and Margarya).

East Asia, specifically the Japanese Archipelago, is a biodiversity hotspot of both vertebrates and invertebrates. Mollusks represent a burst of species diversity in this region due to the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on their morphological traits, such as shell shape and size. However, the evolutionary history of terrestrial slugs in East Asia remains unknown.

Based on recently collected material and records in the literature, 14 species of fiddler crabs (Crustacea: Ocypodidae: Gelasiminae) are reported from Vietnam. DNA barcoding analyses using the mitochondrial gene (cytochrome oxidase subunit I) was performed to identify examined materials and their precise distributional range. Thirteen species-level taxa are identified and, with the exception of and , have minimum interspcific divergences of at least 7.

Accurate species identification is of primary importance in ecology and evolutionary biology. For a long time, the unionid mussels Beringiana and Sinanodonta have puzzled researchers trying to unravel their diversity because of their poorly discernible morphologies. A recent study conducted species delineation of unionid mussels based on mitochondrial DNA variation, opening up a new avenue to grasp species diversity of the mussels.

Background: This study investigated post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression and their related factors among coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients during the fourth wave of the pandemic in Vietnam.

Methods: Vietnamese-fluent confirmed COVID-19 patients for at least 3 d were recruited in this online cross-sectional study to answer a three-part questionnaire including participants' sociodemographic characteristics, PTSD (Impact of Event Scale-Revised) and anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale). Associated factors were determined using multivariable binary logistic regression models.

Revealing the species and lineage diversity of a taxon is important for many biological studies of wildlife. In recent decades, DNA-based approaches have been widely utilised to elucidate the diversity of taxa, especially those that are difficult to distinguish based on morphological traits. This study focused on freshwater clams (Sphaeriidae) in Japan, a biodiversity hotspot of freshwater molluscs.

Carbon dioxide is the major cause of global warming. However, it is a carbon source for phototrophic production of chemicals from microalgae. In this work, a novel flat-panel photobioreactor (FPP) was used for maximization of biomass and lutein production and CO fixation by a lutein-rich C.

A cold-adapted porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (CA-VR2332) was generated from the modified live virus strain VR2332. CA-VR2332 showed impaired growth when cultured at 37°C with numerous mutations (731, 819, 975, and 1014) in the hypervariable region of the NSP2, in which the mutation 731 might play a vital role in viral replication at 30°C. Conserved amino acid sequences of the GP5 protein suggests that CA-VR2332 is a promising candidate for producing an effective vaccine against PRRSV infection.

Background: Anthropogenic factors potentially affect observed biogeographical patterns in population genetics, but the effects of ancient human activities on the original patterns created by natural processes are unknown. , a widely distributed freshwater snail species in East Asia, was used to investigate this issue. It is unclear whether in Japan was introduced from China and how different human uses and varying geographic patterns affect the contemporary population genetics between the two regions.

(APP) is a causative agent of porcine pleuropneumonia. Therefore, the development of an effective vaccine for APP is necessary. Here, we optimized the culture medium and conditions to enhance the production yields of Apx toxins in APP serotype 1, 2, and 5 cultures.

(APP) causes a form of porcine pleuropneumonia that leads to significant economic losses in the swine industry worldwide. The gene is responsible for the secretion of the ApxI and ApxII toxins and the gene is responsible for the adaptation of bacteria to cold temperature and a virulence factor. The and genes were deleted successfully from APP serotype 1 and 5 by transconjugation and sucrose counter-selection.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) targets the intestinal mucosa in pigs. To protect against PEDV invasion, a mucosal vaccine is utilized effectively. In this study, we generated a recombinant adenovirus vaccine encoding the heat-labile enterotoxin B (LTB) and the core neutralizing epitope (COE) of PEDV (rAd-LTB-COE).

Seasonal influenza virus causes acute respiratory tract infections, which can be severe in children and the elderly. At present, rapid influenza diagnostic tests (RIDTs) are popular at clinical sites because they enable early diagnosis and avoid unnecessary use of antibiotics; in addition, high risk patients with underlying disease can be given antiviral drugs. However, the sensitivity and specificity of some of those tests are relatively poor.

Endemic organisms of ancient lakes have been studied as models to understand processes of speciation and adaptive radiation. However, it remains unclear how ancient lakes play roles in genetic and phenotypic diversity of freshwater mollusks. In the present study, we focus on viviparid freshwater snails in the ancient lakes of East and Southeast Asia (Japan and China) to address this question.

Rhodoleia Champion ex Hooker is one of the most primitive relict genera of Hamamelidaceae, a key family exploited to understand the origin and early evolution of flowering plants. Genomic simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were developed for R. championii to perform genetic diversity, phylogeographical structure or even systematic evolution studies of the genus.

The chemical compatibility and the adhesion of energetic materials and additive materials exert a strong influence on the sensitivity, safety and performance of a polymer-bonded explosive (PBX). In this study, the chemical compatibility of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) with several polymers were evaluated using the vacuum stability test (VST) and the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC); while the adhesion between RDX or PETN and each binder based on these polymers was determined through interfacial characteristics using contact angle measurement. The experimental results demonstrate that RDX and PETN are compatible with polystyrene (PS), nitrocellulose (NC) and fluoroelastomer (FKM) according to the STANAG 4147.

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) causes porcine circovirus-associated disease, which is characterized by systemic wasting syndrome, including respiratory problems worldwide. Most commercial PCV2 vaccines are derived from recombinant capsid protein or inactivated whole-virus. We compared average daily weight gain, interferon-γ, and neutralizing antibody levels of a recombinant protein vaccine and an inactivated whole-virus vaccine in a pilot study.
