The development of cascading hydropower dams in river basins has significantly altered natural flow regimes in recent decades. This study investigates hydrological alterations caused by cascading hydropower dams in the Lancang-Mekong River Basin (LMRB) by integrating the Indicators of Hydrologic Alteration (IHA) method with non-regulated flow predicted using the Random Forest (RF) machine learning (ML) technique. The analysis focuses on four hydrological stations: Chiang Saen, Mukdahan, Pakse, and Stung Treng across pre-impact (1961-1991), transition (1992-2008), and post-impact (2009-2021) periods.

This paper assesses the recently intensified saline water intrusion (SI) and drought in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD). While the existing literature predominantly points the cause of drought to the hydropower dams in the upstream of the Mekong Basin, we contribute new physical evidence of the intensification of saline water intrusion (through backwater effect) in the VMD caused by three anthropogenic drivers: riverbed incision (due to both riverbed mining and dam construction), sea level rise and land subsidence. Thereupon, we highlight that it is critical to not underestimate the impacts from the localized factors, especially the riverbed-mining which can incise the channel by up to 15 cm/year and amplify the salinity intrusion.

The clinical efficacy of the monotherapy involving the administration of a high dose of dihydroartemisinin (DHA 900 mg) for 5 days was compared with that of the combination regimen (DHA 600 mg + mefloquine [MQ] 750 mg) in an open randomized study in 90 patients with uncomplicated falciparum malaria in the southern part of Viet Nam. Patients were randomly treated with the DHA-5 day monotherapy regimen (300, 300, 100, 100, and 100 mg given at 0, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h) or the DHA-MQ combination regimen (300 mg DHA at 0 h, then 300 mg DHA plus 750 mg MQ at 24 h). The end points for comparison were the parasite and fever clearance times (PCT and FCT) and recrudescence rates (by day 28 for DHA-5 days and day 42 for DHA-MQ).

Recently, large deletions adjacent to the Philadelphia (Ph) translocation breakpoint on the derivative chromosome 9 have been reported to be found in a substantial number of patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). The existence of der(9) deletion is reported as a powerful indicator of a poor prognosis. So far, der(9) deletion is considered to be generated when the Ph translocation occurs, because when der(9) deletion is found, it is detected in all the Ph-positive (Ph+) cells of a particular CML patient.

We have established a hepatocarcinoma cell line (LFCl2A) that produces voluminous tumors when injected into syngeneic Commentary rats. We have previously shown that when these cells were transfected with an episomal vector expressing the antisense IGFI cDNA the transduced cells partly lost their tumorigenic properties and were able to induce the regression of established hepatocarcinoma in syngeneic animals.
