When tried in court, mothers accused of neonaticide may claim that the umbilical cord just broke during birth and the newborn child bled to death accordingly. To evaluate the possibility of a breakage of the umbilical cord is the goal of this work. Therefore 25 umbilical cords from neonates of both sexes born at term were stretched using an electrically operated material testing machine and the energy necessary to break them was measured.

Background: Oncogenic human papillomaviruses (HPV) are known to be associated with carcinomas of the uterine cervix. Furthermore, current studies have shown that HPV-infection is also associated with a subtype of oropharyngeal cancers. In general, a sexual transmission of the viruses has been shown by numerous studies in the genital lesions.

A fundamental question addressed in this study was the feasibility of preterm birth prediction based on a noncontact investigation of fetal membranes in situ. Although the phenomena of preterm birth and the premature rupture of the fetal membrane are well known, currently, there are no diagnostic tools for their prediction. The aim of this study was to assess whether optical coherence tomography could be used for clinical investigations of high-risk pregnancies.

A late preterm infant was born 4.5 h after intraamniotic injection of 90 mg of Toluidine blue to confirm premature rupture of membranes. Due to the fetal exposition to the dye, the entire body of the patient was blue stained and the baby suffered from methemoglobinemia, Heinz' body positive hemolytic anemia and hyperbilirubinaemia requiring exchange transfusion.

Article Synopsis
  • * A case study of a 23-year-old woman revealed she developed severe sepsis and necrotizing pneumonia after a Bartholin's abscess incision, with PVL-positive Staphylococcus aureus identified in her cultures.
  • * It is crucial to consider PVL-positive S. aureus as a potential cause of severe pneumonia in otherwise healthy patients, especially following minor infections, and to use aggressive antibiotic and surgical interventions for treatment.

Objectives: The endometrium carcinoma is the most frequent malignancy of the female genital tract. Approximately, 10-20% of all patients with an endometrial carcinoma are free of symptoms until the time of diagnosis. The frequent occurrence of an endometrial carcinoma in connection with intrauterine cavity fluid collection (sero- or mucometra) has been discussed controversially in literature.

Natural killer (NK) cells form a structure at their interface with a susceptible target cell called the activating NK cell immunologic synapse (NKIS). The mature activating NKIS contains a central and peripheral supramolecular activation cluster (SMAC), and includes polarized surface receptors, filamentous actin (F-actin) and perforin. Evaluation of the NKIS in human NK cells revealed CD2, CD11a, CD11b and F-actin in the peripheral SMAC (pSMAC) with perforin in the central SMAC.

The long-term results for patients with recurrent ovarian cancer (ROC) are poor. There is a need to optimize treatment strategies to improve outcome by avoiding ineffective regimens which are often associated with exacerbated side-effects. Individualized chemotherapy regimens guided by a chemosensitivity assay (ATP-tumor chemosensitivity assay) have already been used successfully to direct chemotherapy.

The clinical observation of the multidrug resistance (MDR) phenotype is often associated with overexpression of the mdrl gene, in particular with respect to ovarian cancer. However, until now the mdrl-inducing potential of commonly used antineoplastics has been only incompletely explored. We performed short-term cultures of six ovarian cancer cell lines (MZOV4, EF027, SKOV3, OAW42, OTN14, MZOV20) exposed to either blank medium or cisplatin, doxorubicin or paclitaxel at concentrations related to the clinically achievable plasma peak concentration.
