This research investigates whether, and under which conditions, the perception that gender norms are progressively changing towards less gender dichotomy can reduce this gender gap in academic fields. Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy in Venovenous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: A Retrospective Study on Regional Citrate Anticoagulation.

Systemic infusion of unfractionated heparin (UFH) is the standard anticoagulation technique for continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), but often fails to avoid CRRT circuit clotting. The aim of this study was to assess, in patients undergoing CRRT during venovenous ECMO (vv-ECMO), the efficacy and safety of adding regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) for CRRT circuit anticoagulation (RCA + UFH group) compared with the sole systemic heparin anticoagulation (UFH group). We performed a retrospective chart review (2009-2018) of patients treated with CRRT during ECMO.

A new prognostic index of severity of intellectual disabilities in Cornelia de Lange syndrome.

Cornelia de Lange syndrome is a well-known multiple congenital anomalies/intellectual disability syndrome with genetic heterogeneity and wide clinical variability, regarding the severity of both the intellectual disabilities and the physical features, not completely explained by the genotype-phenotype correlations known to date. The aim of the study was the identification of prognostic features, ascertainable precociously in the patient's life, of a better intellectual outcome and the development of a new prognostic index of severity of intellectual disability in CdLS patients. In 66 italian CdLS patients aged 8 years or more, we evaluated the association of the degree of intellectual disability with various clinical parameters ascertainable before 6 months of life and with the molecular data by the application of cumulative regression logistic model.

Enzymatic replacement therapy for Hunter disease: Up to 9 years experience with 17 patients.

Hunter disease is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder characterized by progressive storage of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and multi-organ impairment. Effect of oral L-arginine on blood pressure and symptoms and endothelial function in patients with systemic hypertension, positive exercise tests, and normal coronary arteries.

Thirteen hypertensive patients with microvascular angina were studied before and after receiving oral L-arginine (4 weeks, 2 g, 3 times daily). L-arginine significantly improved angina class, systolic blood pressure at rest, and quality of life. Maximal forearm blood flow, plasma L-arginine, L-arginine:asymmetric dimethyl arginine ratio, and cyclic guanylate monophosphate increased significantly after treatment.

To evaluate whether eNOS gene variants are associated with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, we evaluated polymorphisms in Exon7 (E298D), intron 18 (IVS18 + 27A-->C), and intron 23 (IVS23 + 10G-->T) in 159 type 2 diabetic patients without macrovascular complications and in 207 healthy control subjects. Samples for all hormonal and metabolic variables were obtained after an overnight fast.

For this purpose, 404 healthy subjects were divided into quartiles on the basis of the plasma insulin response to glucose, and 49 individuals were selected from the quartile with the lowest insulin response and 49 from the quartile with the highest insulin response. In this study, we have compared resistance to insulin-mediated glucose disposal and plasma concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) and cyclic-GMP in healthy volunteers with (n = 35) or without (n = 27) at least one sibling and one parent with type 2 diabetes. The 62 volunteers were further divided into groups of those with normal glucose tolerance or impaired glucose tolerance.
