In treating acute bronchiolitis in infants, the decision to use continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) often involves infant referral from the pediatric ward to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). We present our experience of CPAP use in a general pediatric ward, aiming to reduce the pressure on the PICU in recent outbreaks of bronchiolitis. Clinical data of patients less than 12 months of age and admitted for bronchiolitis from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2023 were retrospectively collected.

To prevent recurrent infections and long-term complications, low-dose continuous antibiotic prophylaxis (CAP) has been used. However, the efficacy of CAP is controversial.

Their use in children is of particular interest on one side, because acute infections are very common in children, while they build their immunologic library of competence; on the other side, although many acute infections are expected and turn out to be of viral origin, caregivers will often ask the family doctor or primary care attending to reassure them by prescribing antibiotic treatment, although it may often be unnecessary. The inappropriate prescription of antibiotics in children may likely be a source not only of undue economic burden for the public health system but also of increasing development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

However, systemic toxicity and tumor resistance to these drugs encourage further research into similarly effective compounds. Among others, organotin compounds have been shown to inhibit cell growth and induce cell death and autophagy.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the presenting features, treatment approach, and impact of medical therapy in four pediatric hospitals in Italy. Data on infants < 24 months of age hospitalized with bronchiolitis in the 2021-2022 season were collected.

Methods: A survey was proposed to six out of nine paediatric EDs in the Emilia Romagna region to evaluate attendance data, distribution by age and gender, triage code score, outcome of clinical course, number of hospitalisations and the distribution of patients by disease. Data were collected during March 2020 and compared with that of March 2019.
BackgroundVery few studies describe factors associated with COVID-19 diagnosis in children.AimWe here describe characteristics and risk factors for COVID-19 diagnosis in children tested in 20 paediatric centres across Italy.MethodsWe included cases aged 0-18 years tested between 23 February and 24 May 2020.

In the present work we investigated the experience of families without specific elements of social or health vulnerability during the quarantine period that occurred in the spring of 2020.
Materials And Methods: Between May and July 2020, 22 primary care pediatricians belonging to AUSL Romagna administered to a number of families a questionnaire to detect changes that occurred, during the lockdown, in family environment, school attendance and personal attitudes.
In most children, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a mild or moderate disease. Moreover, in a relevant number of cases, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection remains totally asymptomatic. All these findings seem to suggest that otherwise healthy children with suspected COVID-19 might be managed in the community in most cases, thus avoiding hospital admission and closely related medical, social and economic problems, including overwhelming hospitals.

Risk factors for coronary lesions can vary in consideration of different genetic background and environmental factors.
Methods: Multicenter retrospective and prospective study including 372 consecutive children (58% boys; mean age 34.
Adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) can be susceptible, at least transiently, to treatments with azidothymidine (AZT) plus IFNα and/or arsenic trioxide. However, the real role of AZT in this effect is still unclear. In fact, while reverse transcriptase (RT) inhibition could explain reduction of clonal expansion and of renewal of HTLV-1 infected cells during ATL progression, this effect alone seems insufficient to justify the evident and prompt decrease of the pro-viral load in treated patients.

The available risk scores to predict IVIG resistance were developed in Asian populations in whom their effectiveness has been proven, but data on non-Asian children are limited. The aim of this study is to evaluate the ability of the Kobayashi, Egami, and Formosa risk scores to predict IVIG resistance and CALs in Italian patients with KD.

Lipidomics represents a promising approach to discriminate lipid profiles of malignant phenotype cells. Alterations in phospholipid distribution or chemical composition have been reported in various pathologies including cancer.

To date, abdominal involvement at presentation is not recognized as a risk factor for a more severe form of the disease.
Objective: To evaluate whether presenting abdominal manifestations identify a group at major risk for Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG)-resistance and coronary lesions.
Nitrosocarbonyl mesitylene intermediate undergoes an ene reaction with cinnamyl alcohol affording the corresponding 5-hydroxy-isoxazolidine in fair yields. The synthesized 5-acetoxy-isoxazolidine serves as synthon for the preparation of 6-chloropurine N,O-nucleoside analogues, according to the Vorbrüggen reaction. The compounds were evaluated for their metabolic and apoptotic activity, and their structure-activity relationship is discussed.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFAssessing the actual efficacy of compounds to directly inhibit HIV reverse transcriptase (RT) activity is a main goal in preclinical antiretroviral studies. Our previous studies demonstrated that the effects of inhibitor compounds towards HIV-RT could be efficiently assessed through a simple cell-free assay based on conventional reverse transcription PCR. In the present study, we describe a modified variant of our assay, termed RT real-time quantitative PCR inhibitory assay (RT-qPCR-IA), in which the ability of compounds to restrict the complementary DNA (cDNA) generation by HIV-RT using a specific RNA template is performed by the real-time technique, in order to improve both accuracy and sensitivity of the method.

Although a great number of coumarins substituted by heterocyclic moieties have been prepared, few studies have been carried out on coumarins containing pyridine heterocycle, which is known to modulate their physiological activities. We prepared and characterized three novel 3-(pyridin-2-yl)coumarins and their corresponding copper(II) complexes.
