Introduction: Few data on the impact of specific interventions against Emergency Rooms 'or Hospitals overcrowding are available in France.

Methods: In the present report, we retrospectively investigated the impact of the implementation of a short-stay observation unit associated with the admitter-rounder model, especially onto the other in-patient internal medicine units in a French University Hospital.

Results: During the first 100 days, 242 patients were admitted into the short-stay observation unit.

Aim: The relationship between bronchiolitis and asthma is complex. We assessed whether patients admitted to a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) with bronchiolitis had a greater risk of developing asthma than patients admitted to a paediatric ward.

Methods: We retrospectively included children under 1 year of age, who were hospitalised for bronchiolitis for the first time at the University Hospital of Caen, France, between 2010 and 2014.

A transfection vector based on a peptide dendrimer (1) has been developed and its abilities for DNA binding and transport have been investigated. By attaching a fluorophore to the vector system (1*), several steps in the transfection process could be monitored directly. As DLS and AFM studies showed, the labeled vector 1* condensed DNA into tightly packed aggregates able to enter eukaryotic cells.

Invited for the cover of this issue are Christoph Hirschhäuser and his colleagues from the University of Duisburg-Essen. The image depicts a biotin-labelled transfection vector selectively channelling DNA into a cancer cell. The QR code on the label will lead you to a video abstract (https://youtu.

A transfection vector that can home in on tumors is reported. Whereas previous vectors that allow moderately cell selective gene transfection used larger systems, this small-molecule approach paved the way for precise structure-activity relationship optimization. For this, biotin, which mediates cell selectivity, was combined with the potent DNA-binding motif tetralysine-guanidinocarbonypyrrol via a hydrophilic linker, thus enabling SAR-based optimization.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic led to a widely documented disruption in cancer care pathway. Since a resurgence of the pandemic was expected after the first lockdown in France, the global impact on the cancer care pathway over the year 2020 was investigated.

Aims: This study aimed to describe the changes in the oncology care pathway for cancer screening, diagnosis, assessment, diagnosis annoucement procedure and treatment over a one-year period.

Targeting specific protein binding sites to interfere with protein-protein interactions (PPIs) is crucial for the rational modulation of biologically relevant processes. Survivin, which is highly overexpressed in most cancer cells and considered to be a key player of carcinogenesis, features two functionally relevant binding sites. Here, we demonstrate selective disruption of the Survivin/Histone H3 or the Survivin/Crm1 interaction using a supramolecular approach.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the market share and cost savings from the use of biosimilars to anti-TNF agents in French hospitals, five years after their introduction.
  • Results show that the penetration rates for biosimilars are around 74% to 77% for major anti-TNF drugs like infliximab, etanercept, and adalimumab.
  • Over this period, the use of biosimilars has led to an estimated total cost saving of 824 million Euros compared to the original drug prices.

There is a growing interest in physical activity (PA) in paediatric oncology. Overall studies in children with cancer have reported good adherence, positive trends in health status, and no adverse events. Thus, a general PA program should be offered to paediatric oncology inpatients.

Survivin's dual function as apoptosis inhibitor and regulator of cell proliferation is mediated via its interaction with the export receptor CRM1. This protein-protein interaction represents an attractive target in cancer research and therapy. Here, we report a sophisticated strategy addressing Survivin's nuclear export signal (NES), the binding site of CRM1, with advanced supramolecular tweezers for lysine and arginine.

We report the characterization of amphiphilic aminoglycoside conjugates containing luminophores with aggregation-induced emission properties as transfection reagents. These inherently luminescent transfection vectors are capable of binding plasmid DNA through electrostatic interactions; this binding results in an emission "on" signal due to restriction of intramolecular motion of the luminophore core. The luminescent cationic amphiphiles effectively transferred plasmid DNA into mammalian cells (HeLa, HEK 293T), as proven by expression of a red fluorescent protein marker.

Background: to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a physical activity program (PAP) in children and adolescents with cancer.

Methods: children and adolescents with cancer were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to the six-month PAP (intervention group) or to the control group. The first evaluation was performed at the end of the PAP (T0 + 6 mo).

Nanomaterials are promising novel antibiotics, but often ineffective. We found that nanomaterial-bacteria complex formation occurred with various nanomaterials. The bactericidal activity of NMs strongly depends on their physical binding to (multidrug-resistant) bacteria.

Introduction: An amphibious assault ship was deployed on 22 March in Corsica to carry out medical evacuation of 12 critical patients infected with COVID-19. The ship has on-board hospital capacity and is the first time that an amphibious assault ship is engaged in this particular condition. The aim is to evaluate the feasibility and safety of prolonged medical evacuation of critical patients with COVID-19.

'', French President Emmanuel Macron said in an address to the nation on 16 March 2020. As part of this national effort, the French Military Medical Service (FMMS) is committed to the fight against COVID-19. This original report aimed to describe and detail actions that the FMMS has carried out in the nationwide fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in France, as well as overseas.

In this communication we present the use of a novel class of luminophores with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties based on the steroid estrone. These molecules were equipped with cationic residues yielding amphiphiles suitable for lipofection. To this end, self-assembled luminescent structures were formed in aqueous media and mixed with a red-fluorescent protein expressing plasmid, yielding lipoplexes with increased emission intensity.

The synthesis and self-assembly of a polymer featuring a self-complementary supramolecular binding motif guanidiniocarbonyl pyrrole carboxylate zwitterion (GCP-zwitterion) bearing lactose moieties are reported. The GCP-zwitterion acts as a cross-linker to facilitate self-assembly of the polymeric chain into nanoparticles (NPs) at neutral pH in an aqueous medium. The formation of polymeric NPs can be controlled by addition of external stimuli (acid or base), which disfavors self-assembly of the GCP-zwitterion because of protonation or deprotonation of the GCP units in the polymer chain.

The protein Survivin is highly upregulated in most cancers and considered to be a key player in carcinogenesis. We explored a supramolecular approach to address Survivin as a drug target by inhibiting the protein-protein interaction of Survivin and its functionally relevant binding partner Histone H3. Ligand L1 is based on the guanidiniocarbonyl pyrrole cation and serves as a highly specific anion binder in order to target the interaction between Survivin and Histone H3.

Lyme neuroborreliosis is a bacterial infection caused by the dissemination and proliferation of a Borrelia species in the central nervous system. Neuroborreliosis occurs after transmission of the pathogen from an infected tick to a human host during a tick bite. We report nine cases of pediatric neuroborreliosis collected by the National Observatory of Pediatric Bacterial Meningitis in France between 2001 and 2012.
