Non-communicable diseases represent a global health burden with increasing prevalence. To prevent or improve this type of diseases, dietary strategies based on healthy foods have been suggested. Cereals are the most consumed foods in the world and preventive effects of whole grains on health have been described.

Vascular injury during cholecystectomy: A multicenter critical analysis behind the drama.

Background: The management of a vascular injury during cholecystectomy is still very complicated, especially in centers not specialized in complex hepatobiliary surgery.

Methods: This was a multi-institutional retrospective study in patients with vascular injuries during cholecystectomy from 18 centers in 4 countries. The aim of the study was to analyze the management of vascular injuries focusing on referral, time to perform the repair, and different treatments options outcomes.

Background: Iatrogenic bile duct injury (IBDI) is a challenging surgical complication. IBDI management can be guided by artificial intelligence models. Our study identified the factors associated with successful initial repair of IBDI and predicted the success of definitive repair based on patient risk levels.

SARS-CoV-2 infections in children are frequently asymptomatic or mild and can go unnoticed. This study aimed to describe the seroprevalence and clinical course of SARS-CoV-2 in a cohort of children with rheumatic diseases in a real-life setting and assess possible risk factors. A cross-sectional study was performed in a paediatric rheumatology unit (September 2020 to February 2021).

Post-Truth and Education: STS Vaccines to Re-establish Science in the Public Sphere.

Post-truth is a social condition that threatens the trust in science and people's critical thinking. This paper analyzes some of the educational responses to post-truth, claiming the potential contributions of Science and Technology Studies (STS). Some of the responses based on traditional epistemology, characterized as , are contrasted with some of the possible responses based on a more complex and interdisciplinary knowledge of science and technology.

Housing as a Social Determinant of Health: Evidence from Singapore, the UK, and Kenya: the 3-D Commission.

Housing is a paradigmatic example of a social determinant of health, as it influences and is influenced by structural determinants, such as social, macroeconomic, and public policies, politics, education, income, and ethnicity/race, all intersecting to shaping the health and well-being of populations. It can therefore be argued that housing policy is critically linked to health policy. However, the extent to which this linkage is understood and addressed in public policies is limited and highly diverse across and within countries.

Data, Social Determinants, and Better Decision-making for Health: the 3-D Commission.

More than a decade after the World Health Organization Commission on the Social Determinants of Health (SDoH), it is becoming widely accepted that social and economic factors, including but not limited to education, energy, income, race, ethnicity, and housing, are important drivers of health in populations. Despite this understanding, in most contexts, social determinants are not central to local, national, or global decision-making. Greater clarity in conceptualizing social determinants, and more specificity in measuring them, can move us forward towards better incorporating social determinants in decision-making for health.

Hypertension in Prenatally Undernourished Young-Adult Rats Is Maintained by Tonic Reciprocal Paraventricular-Coerulear Excitatory Interactions.

Prenatally malnourished rats develop hypertension in adulthood, in part through increased α-adrenoceptor-mediated outflow from the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) to the sympathetic system. We studied whether both α-adrenoceptor-mediated noradrenergic excitatory pathways from the locus coeruleus (LC) to the PVN and their reciprocal excitatory CRFergic connections contribute to prenatal undernutrition-induced hypertension. For that purpose, we microinjected either α-adrenoceptor or CRH receptor agonists and/or antagonists in the PVN or the LC, respectively.

Morphological remarks on Adelphydraena amazonica Perkins amp; Ribera, 2020 and new records of two other Hydraenidae from Brazil (Coleoptera).

Undescribed morphological features of Adelphydraena amazonica Perkins Ribera, 2020 are provided based on material collected in the type locality (Amazonas State, northern Brazil). Aedeagus, male sternite X, last female abdominal segments and spermatheca are illustrated and described for the first time. Habitat information on the type locality is also included.

Scientific Literacy and Social Transformation: Critical Perspectives About Science Participation and Emancipation.

The paper provides a systematic theoretical analysis of the main visions of the concept of scientific literacy developed in the last 20 years. It is described as a transition from a transmissive educational vision of scientific literacy (Vision-I) to a transformative vision (Vision-III), with a stronger engagement with social participation and emancipation. Using conceptual tools from sociology and the philosophy of education, the notions of science participation and emancipation associated with transformative Vision-III are critically analyzed in order to draw attention to the growing need to define them with greater accuracy as key conceptual components of scientific literacy.

Without the prompt supply of sterile surgical trays from the Sterile Processing Department (SPD), the OR would not be able to perform surgeries to its busy schedule. Purpose And Objectives: Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have a large burden of noncommunicable diseases and confront leadership capacity challenges and gaps in implementation of proven interventions. To address these issues, we designed the Public Health Leadership and Implementation Academy (PH-LEADER) for noncommunicable diseases. The objective of this program evaluation was to assess the quality and effectiveness of PH-LEADER.

The entactogen MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine, "Ecstasy") exerts its psychotropic effects acting primarily as a substrate of the serotonin transporter (SERT) to induce a non-exocytotic release of serotonin. Nevertheless, the roles of specific positions of the aromatic ring of MDMA associated with the modulation of typical entactogenic effects, using analogs derived from the MDMA template, are still not fully understood. Early postnatal environmental enrichment restores neurochemical and functional plasticities of the cerebral cortex and improves learning performance in hidden-prenatally-malnourished young-adult rats.

Moderate reduction of dietary protein (from 25% to 8% casein) in pregnant rats, calorically compensated by carbohydrates, gives rise to 'hidden prenatal malnutrition' (HPM) in the offspring since it does not alter body and brain weights of pups at birth. However, this dietary treatment leads to decreased β-adrenoceptor signaling and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in the pup' brain, altogether with defective cortical long-term potentiation (LTP) and lowered visuospatial memory performance. Since early postnatal environmental enrichment (EE) has been shown to exert plastic effects on the developing brain and neuroprotection both on cognition and on structural properties of the neocortex, in the present study we addressed the question of whether early postnatal EE during the lactation period could exert compensatory changes in the expression of ®-adrenergic receptors and BDNF in the neocortex of HPM rats, and if these effects are associated with an improvement or even a restore of both neocortical LTP in vivo and cognitive performance induced by HPM.

Endometrium and steroids, a pathologic overview.

Normal endometrial function requires of cell proliferation and differentiation; therefore, disturbances in these processes could lead to pathological entities such as hyperplasia and endometrial adenocarcinoma, where cell proliferation is increased. The development of these pathologies is highly related to alterations in the levels and/or action of sexual steroids. In the present review, it has been analyzed how steroids, particularly estrogens, androgens and progestagens are involved in the etiopathogenesis of hyperplasia and endometrial endometrioid adenocarcinoma.

Molecular Mechanisms of Androstenediol in the Regulation of the Proliferative Process of Human Endometrial Cells.

Proliferation in endometria of women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is increased, similar to the biosynthesis of androstenediol (estrogenic metabolite). As previously shown, in human endometrial cells, androstenediol increases CYCLIN D1 levels and KI67 and decreases P27 content. The objective of the present investigation was to determine the mechanisms by which androstenediol promotes endometrial cell-cycle progression.

Expression of steroid sulfated transporters and 3β-HSD activity in endometrium of women having polycystic ovary syndrome.

Intracrinology mechanism involves the metabolism of steroids in peripheral tissues, such as DHEA, to molecules with estrogenic or androgenic activity. Proliferation rate of endometria from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome women (PCOS) is increased, favoring hyperplasia development. Besides, in endometria from PCOS-women the synthesis of androst-5-ene-3β,17β-diol (androstenediol), an estrogenic molecule, is enhanced concomitantly to increased cellular proliferation.

Spanish-Portuguese consensus statement on use of daylight-mediated photodynamic therapy with methyl aminolevulinate in the treatment of actinic keratosis.

Introduction: Daylight-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a new type of PDT that is as effective as conventional PDT in grade 1 and 2 actinic keratosis but with fewer adverse effects, resulting in greater efficiency. The climatic conditions in the Iberian Peninsula require an appropriately adapted consensus protocol.

Objective: We describe a protocol for the treatment of grade 1 and 2 actinic keratosis with daylight-mediated PDT and methyl aminolevulinate (MAL) adapted to the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of Spanish and Portuguese patients and the climatic conditions of both countries.
