Article Synopsis
  • Patients living with HIV in Mauritania are at risk for co-infection with Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Hepatitis D Virus (HDV), with a study revealing a 37% prevalence of anti-HDV antibodies among 292 participants.
  • The study identified genetic variations in the viruses, showing that HDV genotype 1 was most common, along with HBV genotypes D and E, and noted that significant liver disease progression was observed over an average follow-up of approximately 25 months.
  • The findings emphasize the need for screening and treatment strategies for HDV in HIV-positive populations, given the potential for severe liver complications associated with these infections.

We evaluated the accuracy of patient-collected skin lesions, oropharyngeal, and rectal swabs among 50 individuals enrolled in a study of mpox viral dynamics. We found that the performance of self-collected samples was similar to that of physician-collected samples, suggesting that self-sampling is a reliable strategy for diagnosing mpox.

Historically, the shoulder arthroplasty humeral component has been designed for the management of infections, tumours and fractures. In all these cases the stem was needed as a scaffold. Original humeral components were not developed for use in shoulder arthritis, so these designs and derivates had a long stem.

This systematic review of the literature aims to analyse current knowledge to inform choice between hemiarthroplasty (HA) and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) for managing proximal humerus fractures (PHF) in elderly patients; the aim is to understand if rTSA can be considered the gold standard for treating PHF in the elderly when surgical fixation or conservative treatment is not viable options. Studies reporting outcomes and complications of PHF treated with shoulder arthroplasty in the elderly were included. Studies were in English and published after 2008.

To study assessed adherence to 11 chronic medications and one medication class with high medical necessity in people with cognitive impairment (CIM) and identified clinical characteristics associated with nonadherence. This was a retrospective cohort study. 180-day adherence was calculated as the percent of days covered (PDC).

Background: Most individuals with dementia or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) have multiple chronic conditions (MCC). The combination leads to multiple medications and complex medication regimens and is associated with increased risk for significant treatment burden, adverse drug events, cognitive changes, hospitalization, and mortality. Optimizing medications through deprescribing (the process of reducing or stopping the use of inappropriate medications or medications unlikely to be beneficial) may improve outcomes for MCC patients with dementia or MCI.

Background: There is an uncertainty regarding how to optimally prevent and/or reduce pain after dental treatment on children and adolescents.

Aim: To conduct a systematic review (SR) and health technology assessment (HTA) of oral analgesics administered after dental treatment to prevent postoperative pain in children and adolescents aged 3-19 years.

Design: A PICO-protocol was constructed and registered in PROSPERO (CRD42017075589).

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a major problem worldwide. In addition, the spectrum of STIs is now expanding, including parasitic, bacterial, and viral infections. The study retrospectively describes the presence of enteric pathogens among 73 patients with gastrointestinal symptoms of enteritis and proctocolitis attending to an STI unit in Barcelona, Spain, between 2015 and 2016.

A calcium magnesium carbonate composite (CMC) material containing highly porous amorphous calcium carbonate (HPACC) and mesoporous magnesium carbonate (MMC) was synthesized. CMCs with varying HPACC : MMC mol ratios and high BET surface area (over 490 m g) were produced. The CMCs retained the morphology shared by HPACC and MMC.

Salicylic acid (SA) has for a long time been used to treat various skin disorders due to its anti-inflammatory, bacteriostatic, and antifungal properties. In the present work, mesoporous magnesium carbonate (MMC), a promising drug carrier, was modified with 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane to enable loading of SA. The amine modified MMC (aMMC) was successfully loaded with 8 wt.

Objectives: Young people are a critical target group for sexually transmitted infections (STI) surveillance due to their particular behavioural and social related vulnerability. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological characteristics and trends in the incidence of gonorrhoea, syphilis, HIV and venereal lymphogranuloma (LGV) among 15-24-year-olds in Barcelona, and to determine factors associated with HIV coinfection.

Design: We performed a population-based incidence study covering the 2007-2015 period.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how gay circuit parties influence gonorrhea rates among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Barcelona from 2007 to 2016, finding significant spikes in reported cases following these events.
  • There was an overall 32.57% annual increase in gonorrhea diagnoses among MSM, with specific parties showing notable increases in case numbers.
  • The authors recommend that attendees consult healthcare providers and practice safer sex, while calling for enhanced public health measures and further research on prevention strategies.

Entamoeba histolytica has been recently recognised as an emerging sexually transmissible pathogen in men who have sex with men (MSM), causing sporadic outbreaks in countries where it is not endemic. Here we report two closed clusters of invasive amoebiasis occurring in Barcelona, Spain, in October 2016 (four cases) and in January 2017 (four cases).

(3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) was used to modify the surface of mesoporous magnesium carbonate (MMC). The as-synthesized MMC had an average pore diameter of ∼5nm, but amine grafting occurred preferentially on the walls of the largest MMC pores. Analysis of ibuprofen (IBU) loading and release showed that IBU remained stable in the amorphous phase in all the MMC and modified MMC samples.

During 2000 to 2009, data on people undergoing HIV testing and on those newly diagnosed with HIV were collected in a network of 20 Spanish clinics specialising in sexually transmitted infections and/or HIV testing and counselling. The number of tests performed, overall and disaggregated by different variables, was obtained. HIV prevalence among first-time testers and HIV incidence among repeat testers were calculated.
