Objective: To investigate the prognostic value of white blood cell count (WBC) on functional outcome, mortality and bleeding risk in stroke patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis (IVT).

Methods: In this prospective multicenter study from the TRISP registry, we assessed the association between WBC on admission and 3-month poor outcome (modified Rankin Scale 3-6), mortality and occurrence of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH; ECASS-II-criteria) in IVT-treated stroke patients. WBC was used as continuous and categorical variable distinguishing leukocytosis (WBC > 10 × 10/l) and leukopenia (WBC < 4 × 10/l).

The binding of therapeutically relevant synthetic retinoid derivatives to bovine and reindeer beta-lactoglobulin (betaLG) is demonstrated using fluorescence quenching and ultrafiltration/HPLC methods. Furthermore, synthesis of methyl (E)-3-[4-[(E)-2-(2,6,6-trimethylcyclohex-1-enyl)vinyl]phenyl]-acrylate 4 and (E)-3-[4-[(E)-2-(2,6,6-trimethylcyclohex-1-enyl)vinyl]phenyl]acrylic acid 5 is described. All studied compounds bind to both betaLG homologues with nanomolar K(d) values, and the interaction diminishes the pH-dependent aggregation of retinoids.

Methods: We studied 12 children with fetal alcoholic syndrome (FAS) and fetal alcoholic effects (FAE) by magnetic resonance imaging volumetry and by single-photon emission computed tomography with iodine-123 labeled 2beta-carbomethoxy-3beta-(4-iodophenyl) ([123I]nor-beta-CIT) and related these findings to those from neuropsychological and psychiatric tests.

We have studied how some extracellular matrix proteins, fibronectin, fibrinogen, collagen type I and type IV, plasminogen and vitronectin bind to Helicobacter pylori. Radiolabelled vitronectin and plasminogen bound to the haemagglutinating H. pylori strain 17874 at a high level (53% and 32%, respectively), type IV collagen showed an intermediate level of binding (16%), while binding by 125I-labelled fibrinogen, fibronectin and collagen type I remained at a low level (5-7%).
