Retinoid metabolism is altered in human and mouse cicatricial alopecia.

C57BL/6 mice develop dermatitis and scarring alopecia resembling human cicatricial alopecias (CAs), particularly the central centrifugal CA (CCCA) type. To evaluate the role of retinoids in CA, the expression of retinoid metabolism components were examined in these mice with mild, moderate, or severe CA compared with hair cycle-matched mice with no disease. Two feeding studies were conducted with dams fed either NIH 31 diet (study 1) or AIN93G diet (study 2).

Sonographic quantification of ovarian tumor vascularity.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the diagnostic accuracy of quantitated color Doppler sonography in differentiating benign from malignant ovarian tumors, with the use of tumor histologic examination as a reference standard.

Methods: The vascularity of 38 ovarian masses (30 benign and 8 malignant) as quantitatively depicted with color Doppler sonography was analyzed with a readily available software program (ImageJ; National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD). The following quantitative sonographic criteria for tumor vascularity were analyzed: the vascularity index (VI) quantified the difference between the total number of pixels and the number of pixels containing no color/totalx100, whereas the power-weighted pixel density (PWPD) weighted the strength of the signal/total.

Since the end of the seventies a great change of edp-use in gynecological private practice took place. Many applications (for example ICD-coding) are not feasible in short time. In medicine, the electronic data processing is not as practicable as the technical progress permits.

Increased prevalence of neurologic complications among insulin dependent diabetic patients of Algerian origin.

This study was undertaken to ascertain a clinical impression that the prevalence of complications is higher in insulin-dependent Algerian diabetics than in their European counterparts. Forty-one Algerian patients under regular follow-up for 2 years or more were closely matched to 41 French insulin dependent diabetics with regard to sex (34M/7F) and duration of disease (10.5 +/- 1 year; range 2 -32 years).
