A Review of Job Assignments and Asbestos Workplace Exposure Measurements for TAWP Mesothelioma Deaths Through 2011.

Introduction: Asbestos workers have a higher risk of developing mesothelioma; however, few studies have looked at specific jobs and job locations within asbestos factories. The purpose of this study was to investigate asbestos exposure in different job locations of the Tyler, Texas asbestos plant to determine if there was a relationship between the duration of exposure and air fiber concentration burden in workers who developed pleural versus peritoneal mesothelioma.

Methods: This study used a patient information database to compile secondary data on 23 workers who died from mesothelioma through 2011.

Challenges are even greater for youth from racially and ethnically minoritized groups in the United States. Racially and ethnically minoritized youth are more vulnerable to mental health problems than White adolescents, yet are less likely to use mental health services.

Evaluation of the portability of computable phenotypes with natural language processing in the eMERGE network.

The electronic Medical Records and Genomics (eMERGE) Network assessed the feasibility of deploying portable phenotype rule-based algorithms with natural language processing (NLP) components added to improve performance of existing algorithms using electronic health records (EHRs). Based on scientific merit and predicted difficulty, eMERGE selected six existing phenotypes to enhance with NLP. We assessed performance, portability, and ease of use.

Background: General patient acuity is increasing in the United States, with more patients having multiple comorbidities and acute-on-chronic conditions. Hospitalizations may also be complicated by serious adverse events, often unrelated to the admitting medical diagnosis. In our facility, the late detection of patient deterioration on general medical units often resulted in increased length of stay (LOS) in the ICU and poor patient outcomes.

Background: Noise produced by routine NICU caregiving exceeds recommended intensity. As California hospitals undergo construction to meet seismic safety regulations, vulnerable neonates are potentially exposed to even higher levels of noise.

Research supports the importance of family-centered care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The significance of continuity in family-centered care beyond the NICU has recently gained attention. Parenting Preemies is a unique and easily replicated postdischarge program designed to ease the transition from hospital to home for NICU graduates and their families.
