Background: The detection of genetic sequences represents the gold standard procedure for species discrimination, genetic characterisation of tumours, and identification of pathogens. The development of new molecular detection methods, accessible and cost effective, is of great relevance. Biosensors based on plasmonic nanoparticles, such as gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), provide a powerful and versatile platform for highly sensitive, economic, user-friendly and label-free sensing.

Neolithic farming and animal husbandry were first developed in the Near East ~ 10,000 BCE and expanded westwards, reaching westernmost Iberia no later than 5500 BCE. It resulted in major social, cultural, economic and dietary changes. Yet, the impact of this change on human mandibular morphology in Iberia is yet to be assessed, which is regrettable because mandible form is impacted by population history and diet.

Parallel robots are being increasingly used as a fundamental component of lower-limb rehabilitation systems. During rehabilitation therapies, the parallel robot must interact with the patient, which raises several challenges to the control system: (1) The weight supported by the robot can vary from patient to patient, and even for the same patient, making standard model-based controllers unsuitable for those tasks since they rely on constant dynamic models and parameters. (2) The identification techniques usually consider the estimation of all dynamic parameters, bringing about challenges concerning robustness and complexity.

ketol-acid reductoisomerases have been widely studied due to their metabolic importance towards development of drug-resistant bacteria treatment. We here report the biochemical characterization of a new KARI (MtKARI-II) from a variant with a similar kinetic profile to class I KARIs. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that MtKARI-II is clustered into a class II KARI superfamily.

Relapsed or refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) cases have a poor outcome. Here we analysed clinico-biological features in 373 DLBCL patients homogeneously treated with rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisolone (R-CHOP), in order to identify variables associated with early failure to treatment (EF), defined as primary refractoriness or relapse within 12 months from diagnosis. In addition to clinical features, mutational status of 106 genes was studied by targeted next-generation sequencing in 111 cases, copy number alterations in 87, and gene expression profile (GEP) in 39.

Ultra-high concentrator photovoltaic systems aim to enhance the conversion efficiency of sunlight and to reduce the cost of electricity. However, it is still necessary to develop optical systems with higher efficiencies and angular tolerances for them to become a reality. This Letter proposes a novel design that is able to achieve a geometric concentration of 4096×.

Remote focusing is widely used in 3D two-photon microscopy and 3D photostimulation because it enables fast axial scanning without moving the objective lens or specimen. However, due to the design constraints of microscope optics, remote focus units are often located in non-telecentric positions in the optical path, leading to significant depth-dependent 3D field distortions in the imaging volume. To address this limitation, we characterized 3D field distortions arising from non-telecentric remote focusing and present a method for distortion precompensation.

Whole genome sequencing (WGS) is able to differentiate closely related Mycobacterium tuberculosis variants within the same transmission cluster. Our aim was to evaluate if this higher discriminatory power may help identify and characterize more actively transmitted variants and understand the factors behind their success. We selected a robust MIRU-VNTR-defined cluster from Almería, Spain (22 cases throughout 2003-2019).

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is an aggressive B-cell lymphoma with an immunoblastic/large-cell morphology and terminal B-cell differentiation. The differential diagnosis from Burkitt lymphoma, plasma cell myeloma and some variants of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma may be challenging because of the overlapping morphological, genetic and immunophenotypic features. Furthermore, the genomic landscape in PBL is not well known.

Background: Growing international migration has increased the complexity of tuberculosis transmission patterns. Italy's decision to close its borders in 2018 made of Spain the new European porte entrée for migration from the Horn of Africa (HA). In one of the first rescues of migrants from this region at the end of 2018, tuberculosis was diagnosed in eight subjects, mainly unaccompanied minors.

Ankle injuries are among the most common injuries in sport and daily life. However, for their recovery, it is important for patients to perform rehabilitation exercises. These exercises are usually done with a therapist's guidance to help strengthen the patient's ankle joint and restore its range of motion.

Two-photon microscopy is widely used to investigate brain function across multiple spatial scales. However, measurements of neural activity are compromised by brain movement in behaving animals. Brain motion-induced artifacts are typically corrected using post hoc processing of two-dimensional images, but this approach is slow and does not correct for axial movements.

Carpal coalitions, resulting from a failure of separation of the cartilaginous precursors of the carpal bones during gestation, may be osseous or non-osseous. Even though lunate-triquetral coalitions are the most common of all carpal coalitions there is only one previous palaeopathological report of such a coalition. This study presents a non-osseous lunate-triquetral coalition found amongst the mostly cremated commingled bones from a Chalcolithic pit at Perdigões (Portugal).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the increasing incidence of IgA nephropathy among older adults (aged ≥65) and analyzes various clinical aspects of the disease based on a cohort of 151 patients diagnosed between 1990 and 2015.
  • Researchers observed a significant rise in diagnoses over the years, with common symptoms including asymptomatic urinary issues and acute kidney injury (AKI), particularly related to hematuria.
  • The study found that age, serum creatinine levels, and kidney biopsy findings were linked to worse outcomes, while treatment with specific medications showed potential benefits for survival rates.

We assembled genome-wide data from 271 ancient Iberians, of whom 176 are from the largely unsampled period after 2000 BCE, thereby providing a high-resolution time transect of the Iberian Peninsula. We document high genetic substructure between northwestern and southeastern hunter-gatherers before the spread of farming. We reveal sporadic contacts between Iberia and North Africa by ~2500 BCE and, by ~2000 BCE, the replacement of 40% of Iberia's ancestry and nearly 100% of its Y-chromosomes by people with Steppe ancestry.

Rapid diagnosis of an infectious disease outbreak in the field is critical for limiting the escalation of an outbreak into an epidemic. Devices suited to point-of-care (POC) diagnosis of cholera must not only demonstrate clinical laboratory levels of sensitivity and specificity but do so in a portable and low-cost manner, with a simplistic readout. We report work toward an on-chip electrochemical immunosensor for the detection of cholera toxin subunit B (CTX), based on a dendritic gold architecture biofunctionalized via poly(2-cyanoethyl)pyrrole (PCEPy).
