The in vitro cultivation of Leishmania and Trypanosoma parasites plays an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of parasitic diseases. Although Evans's modified Tobie and Novy-MacNeal-Nicolle media, for and , respectively, are the two commonly used media for both isolation and maintenance of strains in vitro, their preparation is expensive and laborious and requires fresh rabbit blood from housed animals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the in vitro growth of both parasites with an alternative monophasic, blood-free, easy, and affordable medium called RPMI-PY, which was previously demonstrated suitable for the in vitro growth of .

When PE is suspected, subcutaneous Low Molecular Weight Heparin (LMWH) should be administered even before the results of the PE diagnostic flowchart. In our study, we aimed to evaluate a possible interaction (in vitro interference) between Tc-MAA and LMWH.

Therefore, the patient was sent to have a left pharyngectomy. After the pharyngectomy, the patient reported persistent swallowing disorders and nasal reflux.

For this purpose, we cloned the conserved kDNA fragment of 120 bp into competent cells and correlated them with serial dilutions of DNA extracted from reference parasite cultures calculating that a parasite cell contains approximately 36 molecules of kDNA. This assay was applied to estimate parasite load in clinical samples from visceral, cutaneous leishmaniasis patients and infected dogs and cats comparing with conventional diagnosis.

The aim of this study was to assess the clinical features of MAFLD in DM1 patients.
Methods: We investigated the prevalence and the diagnostic features of MAFLD in a cohort of 29 outpatient fully characterized DM1 patients; afterward, we compared the selected cohort of DM1-MAFLD individuals with a propensity-matched cohort of non-DM1-MAFLD RESULTS: 13/29 (44.
Dysphagia is common in tracheostomized patients who underwent head and neck surgery for cancer treatment. The objective of this study was to evaluate, by means of oropharyngoesophageal scintigraphy (OPES), the impact of an occluded tracheal tube (TT) on swallowing in patients treated for head and neck cancer before hospital discharge, to provide further information to the benefit of out-patient care management. From October 2018 to November 2019, we enrolled 19 tracheostomized patients (6 females and 13 males; mean age 61 years) who underwent primary surgical resection of head and neck tumor and swallowing rehabilitation during hospitalization.

So far, only few, mainly retrospective studies evaluated this specific topic in DM1, so we performed a perspective study, enrolling 61 DM1 patients who underwent an extensive diagnostic protocol, including administration of the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS), a validated patient-reported questionnaire about GI symptoms, laboratory tests, liver US scan, and an intestinal permeability assay, in order to characterize frequency and assess correlations regarding specific gastrointestinal manifestations with demographic or other DM1-related features. Our results in our DM1 cohort confirm the high frequency of various gastrointestinal manifestations, with the most frequent being constipation (45.

The present study was aimed to assess IP after LT and evaluated its association with laboratory tests and clinical parameters, as well as with the development of infections.
Methods: LT recipients were consecutively enrolled and compared with an equal number of patients with liver cirrhosis and healthy subjects.
The intimate connection and the strict mutual cooperation between the gut and the liver realizes a functional entity called gut-liver axis. The integrity of intestinal barrier is crucial for the maintenance of liver homeostasis. In this mutual relationship, the liver acts as a second firewall towards potentially harmful substances translocated from the gut, and is, in turn, is implicated in the regulation of the barrier.

We hypothesize that, diet could be able to modulate intestinal permeability in patients with NAFLD.
Aim: To detect diet-induced modification of intestinal permeability in patients with NAFLD undergoing a Mediterranean diet or a low-fat diet.
A 47-year-old man, with a history of anabolic steroid abuse, developed hepatic adenomatosis and multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma. He underwent ultrasound and CT follow-up, showing multiple solid and fluid hepatic lesions. Consequently, hospitalization was required because of high fever (up to 39°C), weakness, and anorexia.

Women with RPL show higher prevalence of undiagnosed gut disorders. Furthermore, in endometrial tissues of RPL women, higher expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and Nalp-3 inflammasome has been observed.

Background/aims: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is characterized by chronic abdominal pain or discomfort accompanied by abnormal bowel movements. In sensitized subjects, ingested nickel (Ni) may induce gastrointestinal symptoms similar to IBS, in addition to typical systemic cutaneous lesions (systemic nickel allergy syndrome [SNAS]). A low nickel diet could improve the systemic manifestations.

Here, we evaluated the recovery of swallowing after supracricoid partial laryngectomy (SCL) in patients with primary or recurrent laryngeal cancer. A high prevalence of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and sleep disordered breathing was documented in DM1; however, there are limited data available regarding DM2. Goals of the study were: (1) to evaluate the prevalence of sleep apnea in a large cohort of patients (71 DM1 and 14 DM2) and (2) to analyze correlations among such disorders and clinical features of myotonic dystrophies.

We report a case of severe SAPHO syndrome with acne conglobata and a diffuse involvement of the anterior chest wall and sacroiliac joints that required treatment with isotretinoin and adalimumab, a new fully human anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α monoclonal antibody. Combination treatment determined a complete clinical remission of cutaneous and osteoarticular manifestations after 48 weeks.

IPAA is a complex procedure, and complications occur frequently.

Pharyngocutaneous fistula is the most common non-fatal complication following total laryngectomy. To start oral feeding and exclude the presence of a pharyngocutaneous fistula, a subjective test and instrumental assessments using videofluoroscopy, have been described. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of oral-pharyngo-oesophageal scintigraphy as an objective and non-invasive tool to establish presence, site and dimensions of the fistula.

The aim of this study was to assess IP in LC patients with respect to healthy controls.

Unlabelled: The role played by the gut in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is still a matter of debate, although animal and human studies suggest that gut-derived endotoxin may be important. We investigated intestinal permeability in patients with NAFLD and evaluated the correlations between this phenomenon and the stage of the disease, the integrity of tight junctions within the small intestine, and prevalence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). We examined 35 consecutive patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD, 27 with untreated celiac disease (as a model of intestinal hyperpermeability) and 24 healthy volunteers.
