Background: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) exhibit higher risk for celiac disease (CD) than general population. Although literature suggests CD could be associated with behavioural problems in both paediatric and adult age, such association has been poorly explored in children and adolescents DS. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate differences in emotional/behavioural difficulties, adaptive skills and sleep problems between children with DS with and without CD.

Background: Subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) is particularly frequent in individuals with Down syndrome (DS). Despite the amount of evidence suggesting SH is associated with psychopathological symptoms and sleep problems in general population, poor is known about the emotional and behavioral features associated with SH in children with DS.

Objective: The first aim of the current study was to investigate differences in emotional and behavioral profiles between a group of children with DS exhibiting co-occurring SH and a group of age and BMI-matched children with DS without co-occurring SH.

Pancreatic pseudocysts are mostly located in the peripancreatic region, but extra-abdominal intrathoracic extensions can occur and mimic respiratory and ischemic symptoms. Mediastinal location is an example that can present with dyspnea and retrosternal chest pain. Pancreatic-pleural fistulas can form from pseudocysts, often resulting in large and recurrent pleural effusions.

Background: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) are at risk of developing sleep problems. In spite of the well-established knowledge on the presence of sleep difficulties in DS individuals and the associated emotional and behavioral problems, less is known about the possible differences in the kind of associations between sleep and emotional/behavioral problems across different age ranges.

Methods: In this retrospective study, we included 289 participants with DS aged 6-18 years with the aims to explore differences in the distribution of sleep problems between specific age groups (school age vs.

Background: Down syndrome (DS) or Trisomy 21 is the most common chromosomal disease and is characterized by possible heart defects, cognitive impairment and visual disorders.

Case Presentation: We describe for the first time a 17-year-old Caucasian girl suffering from Down syndrome associated with vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC), a rare disorder of the anterior segment of the eye, characterized by intense photophobia, redness, watering eyes and itching due to an inflammatory-allergic reaction of the cornea and conjunctiva. On slit-lamp examination, the girl showed conjunctival hyperemia, papillary hypertrophy, giant papillae and corneal leukoma in right eye as a result of a previous corneal ulcer.

Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) are at increased risk for being overweight/obese, but the associated cardiometabolic risk (CR) is not clear. Cross-sectional anthropometric and clinical laboratory data from a multi-site, international cohort of individuals with DS were analyzed to determine cardiometabolic risk by reporting observed distributions of cardiometabolic biomarkers in overweight/obese individuals with DS throughout the lifespan. Descriptive statistics and regression analyses by age categories determined the distributive percentiles for cardiometabolic biomarkers and tested for adiposity as a predictor of CR.

Relapse is a major cause of treatment failure after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for acute leukemia. Here, we report a monocentric retrospective study of all HSCTs for B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) performed during the years 2005-2021 ( = 138, including 51 children), aiming to identify the optimal use of lineage-specific recipient-donor chimerism analysis for prediction of relapse. In adults, relapse was associated with increased recipient chimerism in CD3 bone marrow cells sampled at least 30 days before a relapse.

To evaluate the effect of dietary interventions aimed at weight loss in gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms and general health-related quality of life (HRQL) in overweight and obese patients. A population of GERD patients were randomized into two groups: the intervention group received individualized dietary counselling on scheduled appointments throughout 6 months of follow-up (n = 31) and the control group received only informative dietary guidelines on baseline (n = 31). Anthropometric data were monthly collected, and the HRQL score for GERD (GERD-HRQL) and the Health Survey (SF-36) questionnaires were applied on baseline and reevaluated at the end of follow-up.

Background: People with Down syndrome (DS) are one of the highest risk groups for mortality associated with COVID-19, but outcomes may differ across countries due to different co-morbidity profiles, exposures, and societal practices, which could have implications for disease management. This study is designed to identify differences in clinical presentation, severity, and treatment of COVID-19 between India and several high-income countries (HICs).

Methods: We used data from an international survey to examine the differences in disease manifestation and management for COVID-19 patients with DS from India vs HIC.

Article Synopsis
  • Research on managing Unexplained Regression in Down syndrome (URDS) is sparse, leading to the compilation of data from seven clinics with 51 adolescents and young adults diagnosed with URDS.
  • The study employed various medical evaluations and treatments, with noticeable improvement in patient symptoms particularly linked to intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy.
  • Findings indicate that URDS can be treated effectively and highlight the need for future research to create standardized guidelines and objective measures for clinical practice in managing this condition.

Sleep is a major concern, especially in people with Down Syndrome (DS). Beyond Obstructive Sleep Apnea, a number of other sleep difficulties have been reported in children with DS, such as delayed sleep onset, night-time awakenings, and early morning awakenings. The detrimental effect of sleep difficulties seems to contribute to and exacerbate the cognitive and behavioral outcomes of DS.

Recipient-donor chimerism is routinely analyzed after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) to monitor engraftment and graft rejection. For malignancies, chimerism can also be used to screen for disease relapse post-HSCT but methodology and interpretation of results are not standardized and likely depend on underlying diagnosis. We have implemented highly sensitive and accurate methodologies for chimerism analysis for the purpose of improving relapse prediction.
