Background: Numerous studies have explored the role of kidney replacement therapy (KRT) in phosphorus (P) control among prevalent hemodialysis (HD) patients. However, whether the reduction of P achieved during KRT affects parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels is still a matter of debate.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study on the prevalent HD population at the Division of Nephrology, University Hospital of Verona, from January to December 2022.

Hemoperfusion with high-affinity polyethylene microbeads (Seraph-100) for the removal of pathogens in chronic critically ill patients: Clinical experience.

Critically ill septic patients present variable clinical trajectories, with some succumbing to hyperinflammatory responses while others develop a chronic critical illness, characterized by a prolonged low-grade inflammation, muscle atrophy, and mechanical ventilation dependency and often develop secondary infections often caused by from low-virulence microorganisms or reactivated latent viruses. The Seraph-100 hemoperfusion cartridge takes advantage from heparin-coated ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene microbeads mimicking pathogen-binding cell receptors and can adsorb both pathogens and damage-associated molecular patterns released by injured tissues. We describe two chronic critically ill patients who developed secondary viral bloodstream infections successfully treated with this device.

Oxidative Stress and Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury in Kidney Transplantation: Focus on Ferroptosis, Mitophagy and New Antioxidants.

Although there has been technical and pharmacological progress in kidney transplant medicine, some patients may experience acute post-transplant complications. Among the mechanisms involved in these conditions, ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury may have a primary pathophysiological role since it is one of the leading causes of delayed graft function (DGF), a slow recovery of the renal function with the need for dialysis (generally during the first week after transplantation). DGF has a significant social and economic impact as it is associated with prolonged hospitalization and the development of severe complications (including acute rejection).
