Background: Despite concerns on mental health problems related to lockdowns, recent reports revealed a reduction in psychiatric admissions in Emergency Departments (ED) during the lockdown period compared with the previous year in several countries. Most of the existing studies focused on the first lockdown not considering the different phases of the COVID-19 crisis. The present study aimed to analyze differences in ED admission for psychiatric consultation during three different phases of the COVID-19 health crisis in Italy.

Hospitalized older patients are particularly exposed to adverse health outcomes. In this study, we aimed at investigating the prognostic interactions between disability in basic activities of daily living (BADL), cognitive impairment, low handgrip strength, anticholinergic cognitive burden (ACB), and depression on 1-year mortality. Our series consisted of 503 older patients discharged from acute care hospitals.

Background: The aim of the current study was to explore the effect of gender, age at onset, and duration on the long-term course of schizophrenia.

Methods: Twenty-nine centers from 25 countries representing all continents participated in the study that included 2358 patients aged 37.21 ± 11.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common condition in older people and represents a global health issue since it increases the risk of associated comorbidities and all-cause mortality. Furthermore, older people with reduced renal function might be at higher risk for developing functional limitation and disability. Moreover, the current creatinine-based measures of renal function are influenced by several factors in older population.

Background: The aim of the current study was to explore the changing interrelationships among clinical variables through the stages of schizophrenia in order to assemble a comprehensive and meaningful disease model.

Methods: Twenty-nine centers from 25 countries participated and included 2358 patients aged 37.21 ± 11.

Introduction: Aberrant salience is the incorrect assignment of salience or significance to innocuous stimuli, and been hypothesized to be a central mechanism in the development of psychosis. In addition to aberrant salience, social-cognitive models of psychosis suggest that the way people process information about the self is important in all stages of psychosis. The aim of the present study is to explore the relationship between aberrant salience and emotion processing in schizophrenia patients with psychotic relapse.

The aims of the present study were to 1) evaluate clinical differences between patients suffering from schizophrenia (SZ) with mild versus moderate/severe formal thought disorder (FTD); 2) explore relationships between dimensions of FTD, neuropsychological domains, and global functioning; and 3) compare clinical dimensions of FTD in early and late SZ. One hundred thirty-six individuals with schizophrenia were recruited and evaluated during a nonacute phase of illness. FTD was assessed with the Thought, Language, and Communication Scale.

Introduction: A specific clinically relevant staging model for schizophrenia has not yet been developed. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the factor structure of the PANSS and develop such a staging method.

Methods: Twenty-nine centers from 25 countries contributed 2358 patients aged 37.

Empirical and theoretical studies support the notion that anomalous self-experience (ASE) may constitute a phenotypic aspect of vulnerability to schizophrenia, but there are no studies examining the relationship of ASE with other clinical risk factors in a sample of ultra-high risk (UHR) subjects. The aim of the present study was to explore the relationship between ASE, prodromal symptoms, neurocognition, and global functioning in a sample of 45 UHR adolescents and young adults (age range 15-25years) at first contact with Public Mental Health Services. Prodromal symptoms and global functioning were assessed through the SIPS interview.

There is increasing evidence of white matter (WM) pathology in schizophrenia, but its role at the very early stage of the disorder remains unclear. In an exploration of WM microstructure in ultra-high risk (UHR) subjects and first episode schizophrenia (FES), 34 FES, 27 UHR and 26 healthy control (HC) subjects underwent a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) tract based spatial statistics (TBSS) investigation. Whole brain fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), radial (RD) and axial diffusivity (AD) values were extracted.

The kynurenine pathway of tryptophan metabolism has been implicated in the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia. We report here that the kynurenine metabolite, xanturenic acid (XA), interacts with, and activates mGlu2 and mGlu3 metabotropic glutamate receptors in heterologous expression systems. However, the molecular nature of this interaction is unknown, and our data cannot exclude that XA acts primarily on other targets, such as the vesicular glutamate transporter, in the CNS.

This preliminary prospective study evaluated cardiac status in 15 treatment-resistant schizophrenia patients (aged 18-55 years) without evidence of cardiovascular disease. Patients underwent clinical assessment, blood tests, ECG, and echocardiography before and during clozapine treatment for 4 weeks as doses increased from 25 to 100 mg/day. Serum concentrations of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, troponin-I, brain natriuretic peptide, and clozapine+norclozapine were assayed at week 3; ECG and echocardiography were repeated at week 4.

Aims: To investigate, in a group of subjects at an early stage of cognitive impairment, the relationship between anosognosia and both cognitive and behavioral symptoms by exploring the various domains of insight.

Methods: One hundred and eight subjects affected by cognitive impairment were consecutively enrolled. The level of awareness was evaluated by means of the Clinical Insight Rating Scale (CIRS).

The aim of this study is to demonstrate the validity of the Rorschach Perceptual Thinking Index (PTI) in the assessment of reality testing in patients with psychosis. We evaluated the relationship between the PTI criteria and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) scores in 98 psychotic disorder affected patients. Thirty four were evaluated during the acute episode (AP) and 64 were chronically treated and stable (CP).

The present investigation explores the relationship between facial emotion recognition (FER) and symptom domains in three groups of schizophrenia spectrum patients (43 ultra-high-risk, 50 first episode and 44 multi-episode patients) in which the existence of FER impairment has already been demonstrated. Regression analysis showed that symptoms and FER impairment are related in multi-episode patients, regardless of the illness duration. We suggest that the link between symptoms and FER impairment is involved in the progression of the disease.

Individuals with schizophrenia present a neuropsychological deficit throughout the course of the disorder. Few studies have addressed the progression of the deficit since the prodromal phase of the disorder. This investigation explored neurocognition in accordance with the Measurement and Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia (MATRICS) Consensus recommendations.

In the field of the early psychosis two main approaches attempt to develop rating tools, one investigating the basic symptoms domain, and the other the attenuated psychotic symptoms. To explore the relationship between basic symptoms (BSs) and other symptom domains in different phases of the psychotic illness 32 at ultra-high risk (UHR), 49 first episode schizophrenia (FES), 42 multiple episode schizophrenia (MES), and 28 generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) patients were enrolled. Participants were assessed using the SIPS/SOPS and the FCQ scales.
