Article Synopsis
  • Peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) includes various aggressive subtypes, with the PTCL-NOS and angioimmunoblastic types showing particularly poor responses to standard treatment.
  • Two unique cases illustrate how PTCL can present atypically, with one patient initially misdiagnosed with hip pain and another mistaken for a respiratory infection.
  • Both cases highlight the importance of recognizing constitutional symptoms and conducting thorough imaging to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment, ultimately leading to complete remission after chemotherapy.

High sexual quality and activity predict psychological well-being in heterosexual middle-aged and older adults; however, these associations have not been documented in sexual minorities, who have faced lifelong stigma concerning their sexuality. This paper presents data from two secondary studies that explored the benefits of being sexually active and satisfied and the role of internalized homonegativity in a sample of middle-aged and older sexual minorities. Study 1 was a cross-sectional survey collected on 91 sexually active sexual minorities (ages 40-80) in same-sex relationships.

A pyogenic liver abscess is a rare and potentially life-threatening disease, but the development of new treatment options has significantly improved its prognosis. Diseases resulting from infection are frequently associated with diabetes, malignancy, and hepatobiliary disease, particularly bile duct stones. This infectious agent is also frequently associated with severe complications, some of which are metastatic.

Background: Disease management programs are an essential tool in the fight against rising prevalence and costs associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, there is a lack of evidence on the long-term impact of these programs on clinical outcomes, healthcare utilization, and cost. This study presents a long-term follow up of clinical, healthcare utilization and cost, and mortality consequences of The COACH Program, a 6-month telephone delivered CVD prevention program.

Background: The efficacy of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for HPV-negative oropharyngeal cancers (OPSCC) is less explored, especially regarding long-term outcomes and prognostic factors.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective monocentric study on 37 patients with HPV-negative OPSCC treated with TORS with a median follow-up of 3 years, assessing survival outcomes using Kaplan-Meyer statistics and swallowing function via the functional outcome swallowing scale (FOSS). Histopathological parameters were collected either from medical records or histology slides were re-evaluated.

Article Synopsis
  • * A meta-analysis of 7163 records from 89 global studies reveals that combining NbS with traditional infrastructure is the most effective way to address multiple climate-related challenges, particularly flooding and runoff.
  • * Incorporating NbS significantly lowers the impacts of climate hazards, achieving a reduction of 18.6% compared to the 8.1% reduction from traditional strategies alone, highlighting NbS's essential role in developing resilient and sustainable cities in future climate scenarios.

Cationic gemini surfactants have emerged as potential gene delivery agents as they can co-assemble with DNA due to a strong electrostatic association. Commonly, DNA complexation is enhanced by the inclusion of a helper lipid (HL), which also plays a key role in transfection efficiency. The formation of lipoplexes, used as non-viral vectors for transfection, through electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions is affected by various physicochemical parameters, such as cationic surfactant:HL molar ratio, (+/-) charge ratio, and the morphological structure of the lipoplexes.

Climate change can affect biological assemblages by shifting their species' geographic range and changing species richness. Aquatic insects represent more than half of the freshwater animal species but have been neglected mainly in climate change assessments, particularly in tropical ecosystems. Among the aquatic insect taxa, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera (EPT) are well-known bioindicators of environmental changes and encompass an essential metric for rivers and streams' biomonitoring.

Gelatin, a versatile protein derived from collagen, is widely used in the food, pharmaceutical and medical sectors. However, bacterial contamination by spore-forming bacteria during gelatin processing represents a significant concern for product safety and quality. In this study, an investigation was carried out to explore the heat and chemical resistance, as well as the identification and characterization of spore-forming bacteria isolated from gelatin processing.

Background: Improved screening uptake is essential for early breast cancer detection, women's health and reducing health disparities. However, minority ethnic and deprived communities often face lower breast cancer screening rates and limited access to culturally tailored educational materials. A recent review found limited culturally tailored materials for breast cancer education.

Advanced oxidation processes, including photocatalysis, have been proven effective at organic dye degradation. Tailored porous materials with regulated pore size, shape, and morphology offer a sustainable solution to the water pollution problem by acting as support materials to grafted photocatalytic nanoparticles (NPs). This research investigated the influence of pore and particle sizes of photocatalytic MICROSCAFS on the degradation of methyl orange (MO) in aqueous solution (10 mg/L).

  • - Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) is a rare genetic disorder caused by issues with the bone marrow's ability to produce red blood cells, resulting in severe anemia and physical abnormalities, primarily due to mutations in ribosomal protein genes like RPS19.
  • - Current treatments include glucocorticosteroids, blood transfusions, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), with HSCT being the only curative but challenging option due to donor and immunological issues.
  • - Gene therapy, particularly through methods like lentiviral vectors and CRISPR/Cas9 technology, is being explored as a promising curative approach for DBA, potentially transforming treatment options for affected individuals.

Article Synopsis
  • Climate change is expected to lead to more extreme rainfall, especially in tropical regions, increasing the risk of flooding and making climate adaptation strategies crucial.
  • Research focuses on nature-based solutions to mitigate these risks, using an ecosystem service modeling approach in a large urban area with a land recovery plan.
  • The study finds that an intermediate land recovery scenario, where 30% of the area is reforested, is the most cost-effective for reducing flood risks and providing additional benefits, highlighting the value of nature-based solutions in urban planning.

The phenylpropanoid and flavonoid pathways exhibit intricate regulation, not only influenced by environmental factors and a complex network of transcription factors but also by post-transcriptional regulation, such as silencing by microRNAs and miRNA-encoded micropeptides (miPEPs). VviMYBC2-L1 serves as a transcriptional repressor for flavonoids, playing a crucial role in coordinating the synthesis of anthocyanin and proanthocyanidin. It works in tandem with their respective transcriptional activators, VviMYBA1/2 and VviMYBPA1, to maintain an equilibrium of flavonoids.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of inhibitors of the fractalkine pathway in hyperalgesia in inflammatory and neuropathic orofacial pain in male rats and the morphological changes in microglia and satellite glial cells (SGCs). Rats were submitted to zymosan-induced arthritis of the temporomandibular joint or infraorbital nerve constriction, and treated intrathecally with a P X antagonist, a cathepsin S inhibitor or a p-38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) inhibitor. Mechanical hyperalgesia was evaluated 4 and 6 h following arthritis induction or 7 and 14 days following nerve ligation.
