Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how flavonoids affect insulin secretion in β-cells, particularly focusing on resokaempferol (ResoK) and its potential benefits for insulin deficiency.
  • Researchers tested INS-1 β-cells and pancreatic islets from rats to assess the ability of ResoK to enhance insulin secretion under glucose stimulation.
  • Results showed that ResoK increases insulin secretion by stimulating L-type calcium currents, even in dysfunctional β-cells, suggesting it could be a promising treatment strategy for improving insulin secretion.

Article Synopsis
  • Angelica roots have been integral to traditional medicine in various cultures across the northern hemisphere, particularly for treating type 2 diabetes, although this use is often overlooked.
  • The study focused on characterizing specific angelica root species mentioned in the European Pharmacopeia, isolating key metabolites, and evaluating their effects on pancreatic β-cell function related to insulin secretion.
  • Results revealed forty-one secondary metabolites, primarily coumarins, with certain angelica root extracts enhancing glucose-induced insulin secretion, primarily due to their high coumarin content; 23 specific coumarins were isolated for further analysis.

The growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR) is a G protein-coupled receptor that regulates essential physiological functions. In particular, activation of GHSR in response to its endogenous agonist ghrelin promotes food intake and blood glucose increase. Therefore, compounds aimed at blocking GHSR signaling constitute potential options against obesity-related metabolic disorders.

This prospective, single centre, randomised, cross-over study compares patient tolerance of the facemask and mouthpiece for delivery of non-invasive ventilation in an intensive care unit. Twenty-seven patients with acute respiratory failure were scheduled for two 45-min sessions of non-invasive ventilation with facemask and mouthpiece. The order of the sessions was chosen at random.
