Families with multiple cases of leprosy were tested for HLA (histocompatibility leukocyte antigen)-linked control of susceptibility to tuberculoid leprosy and association with HLA-DR2. Thirty-one non-HLA genetic markers were also examined for indications of non-HLA-linked genetic factors that might control susceptibility to tuberculoid leprosy. A significant (P = 0.

Examination of the red cell enzyme profile in a case of congenital methemoglobinemia has shown associated deficiencies of glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) in addition to NADH-methemoglobin reductase deficiency. Contrary to expectations, GR and GSHPx deficiencies do not seem to have contributed to the methemoglobinemia in this case. The lack of symptoms in spite of a high methemoglobin (Hi) level (35%) appears to be due to the restriction of Hi to a small percentage of red cells.

We investigated the pattern of genetic susceptibility to rheumatic diseases in Indians by means of HLA analysis. HLA B27 was present in more than 90% of cases included under the broad category or seronegative spondarthritides. In this respect our data resembled results reported for Caucasian populations.

Adult healthly mice of pure line Institute strain were given, into the foot pad, an intradermal injection of normal human serum in group A and lepromatous serum in group B. In both groups, the animals were killed at varying time intervals. Serial paraffin sections of the foot pad skin 5--7 mu thick, were cut and stained with haematoxylin and eosin, toludine blue, acridine orange and para-bromaniline.

In the mouse foot pad model five different parameters were employed to simulate the condition of ENL as observed in the human. The experimental groups with five to six months leprosy infection were injected intravenously with various anti-mycobacterial antibodies, M. leprae sonicate and 'B' cells obtained from syngenic donors.

An evaluation of the immune state in leprosy was done by the application of a system of graft-versus-host reaction. Peripheral blood lymphocytes obtained from patients with different forms of leprosy and from normal healthy individuals were injected intravenously into the irradiated mice. The rate of blast transformation of the donor cells was measured by the radio-active thymidine uptake.
