Laser hair removal complications and the associated risk factors at a tertiary dermatology center: a case-control study.

Laser hair removal (LHR) has been established as a safe and efficient method for eliminating unwanted hair. This study aimed to investigate the frequency of LHR complications and assess the contributing factors. During one year, 16,900 patients undergoing LHR therapy were evaluated for complications.

Primary adrenal mantle cell lymphoma mimicking a non-functional retroperitoneal paraganglioma.

Key Clinical Message: Patients presenting with abdominal pain and retroperitoneal mass in radiographic images may be in the early stages of primary adrenal mantle cell lymphoma, which requires histological studies for a definite diagnosis.

Abstract: This report presents a 37-year-old woman complaining of ambiguous abdominal pain, with imaging findings revealing a retroperitoneal abdominal mass on the left side of the aorta, and a possible diagnosis of non-functional retroperitoneal paraganglioma. Total laparoscopic excision was performed.

Leukocytoclastic vasculitis in a patient with ankylosing spondylitis: A case report.

Key Clinical Message: Although the concurrent occurrence of vasculitis with AS is uncommon, when patients diagnosed with AS exhibit symptoms including skin petechiae, purpura, abdominal discomfort, malaise, elevated ESR, and reduced complement levels, vigilant monitoring for vasculitis is advisable following the exclusion of secondary vasculitis triggers such as malignancies, infections, and pharmaceutical agents.

Abstract: The primary characteristic of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) involves inflammation occurring within the sacroiliac joint and the spine, leading to destruction and eventual ankylosis. A notably infrequent complication associated with AS is vasculitis, with limited reports linking AS to vasculitis.

Polymerized human hemoglobin (PolyhHb) has shown promise in preclinical hemorrhagic shock settings. Different synthetic and purification schemes can control the size of PolyhHbs, yet research is lacking on the impact of polymerized hemoglobin size on tissue oxygenation following hemorrhage and resuscitation in specialized animal models that challenge their resuscitative capabilities. Pre-existing conditions that compromise the vasculature and end organs, such as the liver, may limit the effectiveness of resuscitation and exacerbate the toxicity of these molecules, which is an important but minimally explored therapeutic dimension.

Castleman disease presenting as lymphadenopathy in a female with systemic lupus erythematosus: A rare case report.

Castleman disease is an infrequent disease that affects the lymph nodes and related tissues. The condition may manifest with lymphadenopathy, characterized by the enlargement of the lymph nodes, alongside additional symptoms such as high fever, nocturnal sweating, exhaustion, and loss of body mass. The diagnosis of Castleman disease typically entails a multifaceted approach that includes a physical examination, imaging modalities, and a biopsy of the lymph nodes that are affected.

Comparison of the accuracy of inpatient morbidity coding with ICD-11 and ICD-10.

Background: One of the challenges when transitioning from International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision (ICD-10) to International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision (ICD-11) is to ensure clinical coding accuracy.

Objective: To determine the accuracy of clinical coding with ICD-11 in comparison with ICD-10 and identify causes of coding errors in real clinical coding environments.

TTP-like syndrome and its relationship with complement activation in critically ill patients with COVID-19: A cross-sectional study.

Background: The covid-19 disease has caused many deaths worldwide since December 2019. Many thromboembolic events, such as VTE and TTP, have been reported since the beginning of this pandemic. Considering the prominent role of complement in developing TTP and TTP-like syndrome in recent studies, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of TTP-like syndrome and its relationship with complement activity in critically ill patients with COVID-19.

Liquid crystal-assisted optical biosensor for early-stage diagnosis of mammary glands using HER-2.

Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers and the second leading cause of cancer mortality among women around the world. The purpose of this study is to present a non-labeled liquid crystal (LC) biosensor, based on the inherent feature of nematic LCs, for the evaluation of BC using the human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER-2) biomarker. The mechanism of this sensing is supported by surface modification with dimethyloctadecyl [3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl] ammonium chloride (DMOAP) encouraging the long alkyl chains that induce a homeotropic orientation of the LC molecules at the interface.

Effect of vitamin C on adrenal suppression following etomidate for rapid sequence induction in trauma patients: a randomized clinical trial.

Background: Etomidate is an imidazole derivative that is widely used in the emergency department for Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI). Although it has a safe hemodynamic profile, there are some concerns about its suppressant effects on the adreno-cortical axis. Vitamin C, as an antioxidant, can play a protective role in this issue.

Biophysical Analysis and Preclinical Pharmacokinetics-Pharmacodynamics of Tangential Flow Filtration Fractionated Polymerized Human Hemoglobin as a Red Blood Cell Substitute.

Red blood cell (RBC) substitutes tested in late-phase clinical trials contained low-molecular-weight hemoglobin species (<500 kDa), resulting in vasoconstriction, hypertension, and oxidative tissue injury; therefore, contributing to poor clinical outcomes. This work aims to improve the safety profile of the RBC substitute, polymerized human hemoglobin (PolyhHb), via in vitro and in vivo screening of PolyhHb fractionated into four molecular weight brackets (50-300 kDa [PolyhHb-B1]; 100-500 kDa [PolyhHb-B2]; 500-750 kDa [PolyhHb-B3]; and 750 kDa to 0.2 μm [PolyhHb-B4]) using a two-stage tangential flow filtration purification process.

Promoter methylation levels of and genes are associated with lung cancer in Iranian patients.

Objectives: Epigenetic alterations like methylation of tumor suppressor genes or oncogenes, in respiratory epithelium have been associated with lung cancer. Hypermethylation of genes promoter is an epigenetic event, and is responsible to tumor suppressor genes inactivation as well as oncogenes activation. This study aimed to assess the role of methylation status in promoter of and genes their potential implication in the pathogenesis of lung tumor in Iranian patients.

On Natural History and Management of Colloid Cysts: Time to Rethink?

Background: Colloid cysts, although benign, may occasionally cause obstructive hydrocephalus and sudden death. Reliable prognostic factors for symptomatic progression have been sought, with heterogenous results.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of all cases of colloid cysts of the third ventricle managed at our center between 2009 and 2019.

Subtype distribution of lymphomas in northwestern Iran: a retrospective analysis of 659 cases according to World Health Organization classification.

Background: The distribution of lymphoma subtypes differs strikingly by geographic variations. However, there is limited information on this research in northern Iran. This study aims to evaluate the incidence, subtype, age, sex, and extranodal distribution of lymphomas diagnosed according to the latest WHO classification in a large referral center in northwest Iran.

Cognitive impairment in people with physical frailty using the phenotype model: A systematic review and meta analysis.

Objective: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to study the relationship between cognitive functioning and phenotypic frailty status.

Methods: We searched Pubmed, Cochrane Library and Epistemonikos from 2000 until March 2022, and used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Samples included both sexes, age ≥55 years, assessed with standardized measures of the different cognitive domains and the frailty phenotype model and analyzing the relationship between the frailty subtypes pre-frail, frail and robust and specific cognitive function.

Paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria, diagnosis and haematological findings, first report from Iran, model for developing countries.

Since paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH) was first described in 1881, the diagnosis and follow-up patients diagnosed with the illness has remained an area of concern, with several different techniques of varying sensitivity having been described in the literature for both the diagnosis and monitoring treatment of the disease. PNH is a rare and life-threatening disease that manifests symptoms of haemolytic anaemia. Hence, a quick and reliable technique for precise diagnosis would be crucial.

Responsible enzymes for metabolizing vitamin D in patients with acute leukemia and the relationship with treatment outcomes: a case-control study.

Anti-cancer properties of vitamin D have been reported in studies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of some key enzymes involved in vitamin D metabolism and the serum levels of related proteins. Fifty-four patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and 55 eligible individuals were studied as the control group.

These information systems have played an important role in managing and controlling epidemic diseases, especially Covid-19. Rosai-Dorfman disease presenting with solitary liver mass without lymphadenopathy: A case report.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD), as a lymphoproliferative disorder with unknown etiology, is commonly identified with systemic clinical manifestations in various organs. In this case study, RDD occurrence was reported with an exceedingly liver mass.

COVID-19 leukoencephalopathy with subacute magnetic resonance imaging findings of vasculitis and demyelination.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) commonly results in a respiratory illness in symptomatic patients; however, those critically ill can develop a leukoencephalopathy. We describe two patients who had novel subacute MRI findings in the context of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) leukoencephalopathy, which we hypothesize could implicate a potent small-vessel vasculitis, ischemic demyelination and the presence of prolonged ischemia. Recent evidence of the direct neuroinvasiness of SARS-CoV-2 leading to ischemia and vascular damage supports this hypothesis.

Clinical Features and Outcomes of ICU Patients with COVID-19 Infection in Tehran, Iran: a Single-Centered Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background: The clinical characteristics of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) were diverse and unspecific. Here, we identified the associated factors with surviving of COVID-19 ICU patients based on the clinical characteristics of patients admitted to one of the Corona Centre Hospitals of Iran.

Materials And Methods: This cohort study was performed retrospectively from February to June 2020 on 133 COVID-19 patients admitted to 4 intensive care units of Masih Daneshvari Hospital in Tehran, Iran.
