This paper demonstrates the benefits of leveraging free-space optics concepts in the design of certain integrated photonic components, leading to a footprint reduction without compromising on performance. Specifically, we present ultra-short, highly efficient and fabrication-friendly mode-size converters based on metamaterial Fresnel lens-assisted tapers. This is achieved using a parameterized inverse-design approach, where the metamaterial phase shifters are realized using fabrication-friendly Manhattan geometries, by optimizing the width, length, and position of the phase shifters.

Deformable mirrors, used to flatten the wavefront in astronomical telescopes, are costly, sensitive, and complex mechanical components that require careful calibration to enable high-quality imaging in astronomy, microscopy, and vision science. They are also impractical to deploy in large numbers for non-imaging applications like free-space optical communication.

Its aim is to explore how women living with a history of breast cancer use metaphors to express and interpret the experience of cancer remission. Data were collected in interviews designed to capture a rich and metaphorical description of participants' experiences with breast cancer and what these experiences mean to them.

Main outcomes were parent-reported responses for (1) child insurance coverage and (2) child general health status. In multivariable logistic regression models, we estimated likelihood of outcomes for children of immigrants compared to those of US-born parents, adjusting for child, parent, and household characteristics.

Methods: Administrative data matches were used to describe the birth characteristics of children born in 2016 meeting screening criteria for birth defects potentially related to congenital Zika virus infection relative to other NYC births and to monitor mortality and Early Intervention Program use through age 2.
Results: Among 120,367 children born in NYC in 2016, 463 met screening criteria and 155 met the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's case definition for birth defects potentially related to congenital Zika virus infection (1.
Aims: Many countries are in the process of designing a deep geological repository (DGR) for long-term storage of used nuclear fuel. For several designs, used fuel containers will be placed belowground, with emplacement tunnels being backfilled using a combination of highly compacted powdered bentonite clay buffer boxes surrounded by a granulated "gapfill" bentonite. To limit the potential for microbiologically influenced corrosion of used fuel containers, identifying conditions that suppress microbial growth is critical for sustainable DGR design.

To standardise and improve hospital care, the multidisciplinary pediatric working group of the Canadian Malnutrition Taskforce aimed to develop a pediatric, inpatient nutritional care pathway based on available evidence, feasibility of resources, and expert consensus. The working group ( = 13) undertook a total of four meetings: an in-person meeting to draft the pathway based on existing literature and modelled after the Integrated Nutrition Pathway for Acute Care (INPAC) in adults, followed by three online surveys and three rounds of online Delphi consensus meetings to achieve agreement on the draft pathway.

APs are patient advisors who have acquired specific experiential knowledge related to living with cancer, using services, and interacting with healthcare professionals. They are therefore in a unique and reliable position to be able to provide emotional, informational, cognitive and navigational support to patients who are dealing with cancer.

In this work we identify and quantify the intrinsic on-chip impairments that may limit further improvement in temperature measurement accuracy. The impairments arise from optically induced changes in the waveguide effective index, and from back-reflections and scattering at defects and interfaces inside the ring cavity and along the path between light source and detector.

Other than the number of Qdash layers, the structures were identical. The eight-layer Qdash SOA gave the highest amplified spontaneous emission power (4.

The first design employs the intrinsic angle dependence of the grating coupling efficiency to determine local wavefront tilt, with a measured sensitivity of 7 dB/°. The second design connects four gratings in an interferometric waveguide circuit to determine incident wavefront phase variation across the sensor area.

Clinician presence is described as a way of (1) being present to the patient and to oneself, (2) being in the present moment, and (3) receiving and giving a presence (in the sense of a gift). We discuss how presence is a way of restoring human beings' relational and dialogical nature.

Little is known about the lived and subjective experience of individuals who lost a loved one under confinement measures.
Aim: This research aims to provide a phenomenological description of pandemic grief (PG) that can be useful in clinical settings and bereavement services.

Background And Objectives: Despite the availability of healthcare and community services dedicated to cancer survivors, these remain underutilized by young adults living with cancer (YAC; aged 18-39). A workshop was organized in Montréal, Canada, to identify the needs of YAC during their post-treatment transition period and explore existing services dedicated to YAC.
Methods: We recruited seventeen stakeholders (N = 17), including seven YAC, to participate in a one-day workshop to consult about best approaches and practices to meet the needs of YAC, post-treatment.
Background: Alcohol use and hepatitis C virus (HCV) are two leading causes of liver disease. Alcohol use is prevalent among the HCV-infected population and accelerates the progression of HCV-related liver disease. Despite barriers to care faced by HCV-infected patients who use alcohol, few studies have analyzed uptake of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatment.

Demographic, behavioural, and clinical data collected in research settings may be of help in identifying those at risk for clinical depression. We aimed to predict the presence of depressive symptoms indicative of a risk of depression and identify important classification predictors using supervised machine learning.

However, for many neglected diseases no or only few commercial assays are available and often with prices prohibiting large scale testing in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). We developed an adaptable enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) using hepatitis C virus (HCV) as a proof-of-concept application.

Direct acting antivirals (DAA) result in high rates of sustained virologic response (SVR), with minimal side-effects. We assessed the impact of SVR on presence of depressive symptoms in the HIV-HCV coinfected population in Canada during the second-generation DAA era (2013-2020).
