Objectives: The aim of this study was to establish the biometric threshold of biparietal diameter (BPD), assumed to be an independent variable of gestational age, at which 100% accuracy in the assessment of fetal sex by ultrasonography is achievable.
Methods: Transvaginal and/or transabdominal sonography was used for detecting the 'sagittal sign' as a marker of fetal sex in 385 fetuses with BPD between 18 and 29 mm. The results of ultrasound examination were compared with sex at birth or with karyotype obtained from amniotic fluid cells or chorionic villus sampling.
The painful lumbosacral symptoms associated with manual lifting by nursing staff constitutes an increasingly important problem in Occupational Health. This category of workers is in fact particularly exposed to risk situations involving the lumbar region of the spine, due especially to the extreme variability of work on the shift, the nature of what is lifted and not always sufficient knowledge and proper performance of the movements. On the basis of a review of a series of studies made on this topic, it was possible to assess the incidence and prevalence of low back pain in selected populations and identify the postural risk to which nursing staff are exposed at work, stressing also the importance of a correct knowledge of manual lifting techniques, frequency and mode of performing them, and the psychological aspects (perception of the intensity of tasks and osteoarticular strain).

For some disorders and certain tissues, it has been reported that specific types of work-related exposure are associated with the development of musculoskeletal pathologies, and that the relative risks for certain types of occupational exposure can be extremely high. This has been proven in relation to tendinitis of the shoulder and hand-wrist, carpal tunnel syndrome, as well as several localized aspecific musculoskeletal symptoms, such as pain.

The present study aimed at analysing the age-related decline in maximal muscle power (W) in 52 sedentary healthy women aged between 50 and 75 years to determine whether force or velocity is the major determinant. Maximal muscle power was estimated from two types of vertical jumps, squatting (SJ) and countermovement (CmJ), performed on a force platform. It was obtained by measuring the vertical force (F(opt)) applied to the body centre of gravity and calculating the corresponding vertical velocity (v(opt)).

However, the magnitude of the contribution to the observed reduction in case fatality rates due the therapeutic improvement is still being debated.
Objectives: To determine the real degree of implementation of the "suggested treatments" on clinical practice, and to evaluate their global effect on coronary mortality.
The present study was carried out in order to describe the physiological profile of top Olympic boa rdsailors of both genders and to measure the energy cost during actual boardsailing with particular attention to the most demanding conditions. Fourteen elite Olympic boardsailors (7 males and 7 females) volunteered to participate in the study. Each subject underwent a maximal cycle ergometer test in orderto measure VO2peak and ventilatory threshold (Tvent).

Methods: Twenty-two volunteers over 60 years of age participated in the present study. The sample was randomly divided in an experimental group of 13 older subjects (3 men and 10 women, mean age 63.
The link between occupation and musculo-skeletal disorders has been focused on in numerous research projects, ranging from those simply observing the different pathological findings reported among workers performing particular tasks, down to the latest studies actually quantifying the "exposure" of workers to physical and psycho-social stimuli, Recently, Hagberg et al (11) carried out a critical review of the literature concerning the upper limbs. For some disorders and certain tissues, the authors reported that specific types of work-related exposure are associated with the development of musculo-skeletal pathologies, and that the relative risks for certain types of occupational exposure can be extremely high. This has been proven in relation to tendinitis of the shoulder and hand-wrist, carpal tunnel syndrome, and tense neck syndrome, as well as several localised aspecific musculo-skeletal symptoms, such as pain.

The authors present a brief history of the development of the Ilizarov external fixator, and the classic uses associated with it. A preliminary study of 3 patients using 56 frames is presented. The Ilizarov external fixator is successfully used in these cases in place of traditional fixation.

Objectives: The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to examine the associations between categories of perceived job strain and blood pressure, measured by clinical and ambulatory devices on a population-based sample of employed men in northern Italy.
Methods: The study included 527 employed normotensive or mild hypertensive nonmedicated men enrolled in an age-gender stratified random sample of 821 25- to 64-year-old residents of the city of Monza (in the vicinity of Milan). The job-strain categories were classified according to the traditional quadrant-term approach and also a new approach based on the comparison of extreme tertile categories in order to enhance contrasts.
Sixteen patients were evaluated following excision of recurrent intermetatarsal neuroma. Each underwent removal of a segment of nerve through an incision on the plantar aspect. The nerve stump was buried in the flexor digitorum brevis muscle.

Methods: We obtained a random sample of 2400 subjects stratified by sex and 10 year age groups to be representative of residents aged 25-64 years of the city of Monza. Participation rate was 69% (1651 subjects).
The trends of age-gender specific prevalence of self-reported smoking habits are presented, observed in two population surveys, performed in 1986-87 and 1989-90 in Area Biranza, a northern Italian industrialized district where a WHO MONICA Centre is located. Methods were internationally standardized to obtain comparable data on two independent random samples, each composed of 1,600 subjects, age-sex stratified and extracted from the 25-64 year old residents. A closed question interview was administered to identify smoking condition (smoker, past-smoker, occasional smoker, never smoker), number of cigarettes consumed per day and attained educational level, categorized in compulsory school and post-compulsory school.

The phenomenon has been particularly investigated for job related diseases, including cardiovascular disease and risk. The group of occupational medicine specialists in the world wide MONItoring program of CARdiovascular disease (WHO-MONICA Project) is now producing a number of hypotheses about the application of internationally defined criteria and tools for SES evaluation in the Italian area of the Project, Area Brianza.

Furthermore the significance of ventilatory threshold (Tvent) and peak of oxygen uptake (VO2peak) as triathlete's performance predictors was assessed. Tvent and VO2peak were measured in six male triathletes performing an incremental treadmill test a week before an ad hoc triathlon event.

Various attempts have been made to calculate 'normal' or 'reference' values for ambulatory blood pressure, mostly by 24-h non-invasive monitoring in groups of 'normal' subjects. The most appropriate approach, however, is to compare 24-h ambulatory blood pressure values and casual or clinic blood pressure values in a random sample of a suitably large population.

From the comparison with the surrounding Italian population and with Balkan populations, some instances of still incomplete genetic admixture can be inferred (ABO*A and O, ESD, PGD and PGM1).

The influence of environmental factors on early development is discussed beginning with studies on the preterm newborn, most of which compare preterms who have reached 40 weeks conceptional age with full term newborns in respect of neuropsychic development. They are therefore open to several methodological criticisms and have supplied often contradictory results. With ultrasound techniques it is now possible to compare the fetus with the preterm in respect of motor development at the same conceptional age.
