Background: Administration of meropenem to penicillin-allergic patients who might benefit from this treatment is usually avoided because of a 47.4% rate of cross-reactivity to imipenem, the prototype of the carbapenem class of beta-lactam antibiotics, demonstrated in a single study on the basis of positive responses to skin tests with imipenem reagents. Anatomical studies have shown that other retinal neuronal cells (bipolar cells, ganglion cells) are preserved in these diseases and they are capable of eliciting visual percepts when electrically stimulated. We describe the design of a prototype 16-electrode retinal prosthesis, and the physiological and clinical results on six blind patients with RP who had the device implanted.

Both methods were based on the amplification refractory mutation system, comparing the heteroplasmic load quantified by restriction fragment length polymorphism in 15 Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy family members, with the results obtained using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction methods. The comparative evaluation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) heteroplasmy from blood samples showed significant correlation between restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis, real-time SYBR Green assay, and TaqMan assay.

This research investigated whether stretching of lung tissue due to increased positive alveolar pressure swings during mechanical ventilation (MV) at various tidal volumes (V(T)) might affect the composition and/or structure of the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) components of pulmonary extracellular proteoglycans. Experiments were performed in 30 healthy rats: 1) anesthetized and immediately killed (controls, C-0); 2) anesthetized and spontaneously breathing for 4 h (C-4h); and 3) anesthetized, paralyzed, and mechanically ventilated for 4 h with air at 0-cmH(2)O end-expiratory pressure and V(T) of 8 ml/kg (MV-1), 16 ml/kg (MV-2), 24 ml/kg (MV-3), or 32 ml/kg (MV-4), adjusting respiratory rates at a minute ventilation of 270 ml/min. Compared with C-0 and C-4h, a significant reduction of dynamic and static compliance of the respiratory system and of the lung was observed only in MV-4, while extravascular lung water significantly increased in MV-3 and MV-4, but not in MV-1 and MV-2.

Methods: Thirty patients with bladder tumors and 10 patients with hematuria and/or doubtful cytologies were treated in a day hospital setting. TUR or biopsies were performed after injecting lidocaine into the outer area of the lesion in the bladder at 2-3 sites under the mucosa.
Objectives: To evaluate the prognostic impact of retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLD) performed during nephroureterectomy on time to recurrence and survival in patients with infiltrative transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the upper urinary tract.
Methods: The charts of 82 patients with T2-T4 TCC of the upper tract were retrospectively reviewed. The median patient age was 67.

Although unavoidable in certain traumatic situations such as motor vehicle collisions, direct neck trauma in sports may be preventable with the use of proper protective equipment.
Clinical Presentation: The following report documents a case of extracranial carotid artery dissection resulting from a foul ball striking the upper, lateral neck of an umpire.
