Classification and pattern recognition of acyclic octenes based on mass spectra.

Two SIMCA models were developed for the classification of acyclic octene isomers, which only form a fraction of a very complex product mixture obtained, for example, from the transformation of 1-butene. The effects of spectral transformation, namely autocorrelation and logarithmic intensity ratios transforms, and (square-root) scaling of the octane isomers mass-spectral data were investigated. Both the spectral-features preprocessing methods and scaling were found to be vital for an adequate development and improvement of the classification models.

Consumer responses to advertising on the Internet: the effect of individual difference on ambivalence and avoidance.

The purpose of this study was to understand the effect that individual characteristics have on consumer advertising processing under high- and low-interactivity circumstances on the Web. Tests on the relationship between individual differences and advertising responses form the basis of this empirical study on the Web. The results indicated that consumers have a higher tendency to avoid or experience ambivalence about Internet advertisements under low-interactivity circumstances, and attitudinal ambivalence lead to avoidance when responding to advertisements on the Internet.

Tubulin cofactor B plays a role in the neuronal growth cone.

Tubulin cofactors, initially identified as alpha-, beta-tubulin folding proteins, are now believed to participate in the complex tubulin biogenesis and degradation routes, and thus to contribute to microtubule functional diversity and dynamics. However, a concrete role of tubulin cofactor B (TBCB) remains to be elucidated because this protein is not required for tubulin biogenesis, and it is apparently not essential for life in any of the organisms studied. In agreement with these data, here we show that TBCB localizes at the transition zone of the growth cones of growing neurites during neurogenesis where it plays a role in microtubule dynamics and plasticity.

Role of cofactors B (TBCB) and E (TBCE) in tubulin heterodimer dissociation.

Tubulin folding cofactors B (TBCB) and E (TBCE) are alpha-tubulin binding proteins that, together with Arl2 and cofactors D (TBCD), A (TBCA or p14) and C (TBCC), participate in tubulin biogenesis. TBCD and TBCE have also been implicated in microtubule dynamics through regulation of tubulin heterodimer dissociation. Understanding the in vivo function of these proteins will shed light on the Kenny-Caffey/Sanjad-Sakati syndrome, an important human disorder associated with TBCE.

Correlation length of quasiperiodic vortex lattices.

We investigated vortex-lattice dynamics in superconducting Nb thin films with different quasiperiodic arrays of magnetic pinning centers. The mixed-state magnetoresistance exhibits minima for well-defined applied fields, related to matching effects between the vortex lattice and those arrays. The results show that critical matching can originate at a local scale.

Controlled study of enteral arginine supplementation in burned children: impact on immunologic and metabolic status.

Objective: We compared the effects of an arginine-supplemented diet with those of an isocaloric isonitrogenous diet on immune and metabolic response of children with burns.

Methods: This was a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in a burn treatment center of a pediatric hospital in Santiago, Chile. All children (1-5 y of age) admitted within 48 h of a moderate to deep burn injury covering 10% to 40% of total body surface area were evaluated.

Tubulin-folding cofactor E (TBCE) is an alpha-tubulin-binding protein involved in the formation of the tubulin dimer and in microtubule dynamics, through the regulation of tubulin heterodimer dissociation. TBCE has also been implicated in two important related human disorders, the Kenny-Caffey and Sanjad-Sakati syndromes. The expression of TBCE as a recombinant protein in bacteria results in the formation of insoluble inclusion bodies in the absence of denaturing agents.

Role of manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieves in styrene epoxidation.

Manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieves having 2 x 2 tunnel structure (OMS-2) and synthesized by different methods were used for studying styrene oxidation with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as the oxidant. The catalytic activity of the as-synthesized OMS-2 materials was investigated. The physical and chemical properties of the OMS-2 materials are related to their activity in styrene oxidation.

Objective: To determine prolonged intubation rates among patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, and to evaluate the ability of the Intensive Care Unit Risk Stratification Score (ICURSS) model to predict these events.

Higher valency ion substitution into the manganese oxide framework.

A new route for higher valency ion substitution into the manganese oxide (OMS-2) framework is reported. Isomorphously substituted vanadium and niobium OMS-2 were hydrothermally synthesized at 200 degrees C for a period of 2 days. Characterization by XRD, elemental analysis, Raman spectroscopy, and resistivity studies proved that vanadium was incorporated into the manganese oxide structure.
