Development of a parent decision support tool for surgical necrotising enterocolitis: a study protocol.

Introduction: Necrotising enterocolitis is a devastating gastrointestinal disease predominantly affecting preterm infants. In 40% of cases, its rapid progression renders conservative treatment insufficient, necessitating laparotomy as the sole viable option for survival. However, high perioperative and postoperative mortality rates, along with severe future potential disabilities and suffering, can complicate the decision of whether surgery is still in the infant's best interest.

A Dutch paediatric palliative care guideline: a systematic review and recommendations on advance care planning and shared decision-making.

Background: In paediatric palliative care, children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions, their families, and their health care professionals often face difficult decisions about treatment, goals of care, and delivery of care. Advance care planning and shared decision-making are strategies that can improve quality of care by discussing goals and preferences on future care. In this paper, we provide recommendations that aim to optimise advance care planning and shared decision-making in paediatric palliative care in the Netherlands.

The brief pain inventory-Interference Subscale has acceptable reliability but questionable validity in acute back and neck pain populations.

Background: The Brief Pain Inventory-Interference Subscale (BPI-IS) is a subscale of the BPI assessment tool developed to rapidly assess the impact of a person's pain on their function. It is uncertain whether it has one or two factors, and whether it has acceptable clinimetric properties in a mixed spinal pain (back and/or neck) population.

Objectives: To determine the clinimetric properties of the BPI-IS in a population with mixed spinal pain.

Incidence of early persistent pain after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery: a single-centre prospective cohort study.

Background: Despite the benefits of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), postoperative acute pain and nerve injury are still present and contribute to early persistent and chronic pain. The purpose of this study is to describe the incidence of early persistent pain (EPP) after VATS, which remains unexplored, to enhance patient care and promote awareness among clinicians regarding this clinical condition.

Methods: A single-center prospective cohort study that included consecutive patients undergoing VATS between January 2021 and March 2023.

Functional outcome of cell seeded tracheal scaffold after mechanical stress in vitro.

Tracheal tissue engineering is still facing major challenges: realization of efficient vascularization and mechanical properties comparable to native trachea need to be achieved. In this study, we present a strategy for the manufacturing of a construct for tracheal tissue engineering by conditioning through cell seeding followed by mechanical stimulation in vitro. Scaffolds derived from porcine trachea decellularized with supercritical carbon dioxide were seeded with stem cells of different tissue sources and cultured in a bioreactor for 21 days under mechanical stimulation.

Back pain Knowledge and beliefs Survey (BacKS): development and assessment of measurement properties.

Objective: To develop and evaluate a new patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) to assess people's knowledge and beliefs about low back pain.

Methods: This study followed the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments guidelines. An 18-item preliminary version of the Back pain Knowledge and beliefs Survey (BacKS) was generated based on evidence-based key messages and current clinical guidelines for low back pain.

Parents' and healthcare professionals' experiences with the content of an individual care plan for pediatric palliative care: a mixed-method study.

Background: The Individual Care Plan (ICP) for pediatric palliative care translates the general guideline recommendations into a personalized plan for the child. Various documents exist in pediatrics globally, aimed at facilitating anticipatory care or coordinating end-of-life care. The ICP aims both, but user experiences have not been studied post-development.

The academic impact of paediatric research agendas: a descriptive analysis.

Background: Increasingly, researchers are involving children and young people in designing paediatric research agendas, but as far as we were able to determine, only one report exists on the academic impact of such an agenda. In our opinion, the importance of insight into the impact of research agendas designed together with children and young people cannot be overstated. The first aim of our study was therefore to develop a method to describe the academic impact of paediatric research agendas.

The Practical Application of the Individual Care Plan for Pediatric Palliative Care: A Mixed-Method Study.

Background/objective: The Individual Care Plan (ICP) for pediatric palliative care was developed to provide person-centered care for the individual child and family. Currently, a lack of clarity remains regarding the use and function of the ICP in daily practice. To further implement the ICP, it is important to identify how parents and healthcare professionals use the ICP and which obstacles or benefits are experienced.

Beliefs regarding the use of imaging among patients with low back pain: A cross-sectional study in the context of a middle-income country.

Introduction: Patients with low back pain may play an active role in the prescription of excessive spine imaging.

Objective: To determine the proportion of patients with low back pain who have beliefs not aligned with current evidence regarding the use of imaging and to identify factors associated with these beliefs.

Design: Secondary analysis of baseline data of a previously published randomized clinical trial.

An International Registry Study of Early-Stage NSCLC treatment variations (LUCAEUROPE) in Europe and the USA highlighting variations.

Objective: Harmonized European NSCLC incidence, treatment approach, and survival based on national tumor registries are unclear.

Summary Background Data: Surgery has the potential to cure NSCLC and significantly prolong survival. This large-scale international study aimed to investigate treatment variations in Europe and the USA, as well as the determinants for its utilization.

Characterisation of pulmonary air leak measurements using a mechanical ventilator in a bench setup.

Prolonged air leakage (AL) following pulmonary resections leads to prolonged hospital stay and post-operative complications. Intra- and postoperative quantification of AL might be useful for improving treatment decisions, but these measurements have not been characterised. AL calculations based on inspiratory and expiratory tidal volumes were investigated in an Intensive Care Unit mechanical ventilator circuit (Servo-I).

Carcinomas are common in humans but rare among closely related "great apes." Plausible explanations, including human-specific genomic alterations affecting the biology of sialic acids, are proposed, but causality remains unproven. Here, an integrated evolutionary genetics-phenome-transcriptome approach studied the role of SIGLEC12 gene (encoding Siglec-XII) in epithelial transformation and cancer.

A Qualitative Exploration of Stroke Survivors' Experiences of Using a Stroke Helpline.

Background: StrokeLine is a stroke-specific helpline used by stroke survivors and their families in Australia to access professional support. There has been little research exploring stroke survivors' experiences of using helplines and their perceived impact on their stroke recovery.

Aim: The aim of this study is to explore the reasons prompting stroke survivors to call StrokeLine and their experiences and to describe the perceived impact of calling StrokeLine on their recovery.

Proof-of-principle of a lung sealant based on functionalized polyoxazolines: experiments in an ovine acute aerostasis model.

Objectives: More effective lung sealants are needed to prevent prolonged pulmonary air leakage (AL). Polyoxazoline-impregnated gelatin patch (N-hydroxysuccinimide ester functionalized poly(2-oxazoline)s; NHS-POx) was promising for lung sealing ex vivo. The aim of this study is to confirm sealing effectiveness in an in vivo model of lung injury.

The Effectiveness of Pain Science Education on Caregiver and Children's Knowledge, Beliefs, Attitudes, and Behaviors-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Pain science education (PSE) can be used as part of treatment and prevention for chronic pain in children. We assessed the effectiveness of PSE on knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors in children and the people that care for children. We set a minimum criterion for education to address pain biology knowledge.

'It's Powerful' The impact of involving children and young people in developing paediatric research agendas: A qualitative interview study.

Introduction: There is a growing consensus that children and young people (CYP) should be involved in matters that concern them. Progress is made in involving CYP in developing pediatric research agendas (PRAs), although the impact of their involvement remains unknown. We aimed to evaluate the impact of involving CYP in developing PRAs and assess the extent to which postpatient and public involvement (post-PPI) activities were planned.

A Dutch paediatric palliative care guideline: a systematic review and evidence-based recommendations for symptom treatment.

Background: Children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions can experience high levels of suffering due to multiple distressing symptoms that result in poor quality of life and increase risk of long-term distress in their family members. High quality symptom treatment is needed for all these children and their families, even more so at the end-of-life. In this paper, we provide evidence-based recommendations for symptom treatment in paediatric palliative patients to optimize care.

The ESTS-AIR database-initial results of a multi-institutional database on airway surgery.

Objectives: Compared to lung resections, airway procedures are relatively rare in thoracic surgery. Despite this, a growing number of dedicated airway centres have formed throughout Europe. These centres are characterized by a close interdisciplinary collaboration and they often act as supra-regional referring centres.
