An automatic and objective system for measuring ocular refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism) was developed. The system consists of projecting a light target (a ring), using a diode laser (lambda = 850 nm), at the fundus of the patient's eye. The light beams scattered from the retina are submitted to an optical system and are analysed with regard to their vergence by a CCD detector (matrix).

The present study analyses the ability of HIV-1 to modulate IL-10 production in cells of monocyte-macrophage lineage cultured in the presence of macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF). Both monocytes and macrophages spontaneously produced low amount of IL-10. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced a strong IL-10 response in fresh monocytes and in M-CSF-treated macrophages.

The humoral immune response to HIV infection plays an important role in determining disease progression. Few and discordant results correlate changes in neutralizing antibody (NtAb) titer with antiretroviral treatment. The NtAb titer against autologous-HIV was evaluated in 33 patients treated with the protease inhibitor saquinavir (SQV, Invirase) and zidovudine (ZDV) alone or in combination.

Uveal melanoma is characterized by an unpredictable clinical course, during which metastatic disease may occur after a prolonged and, at present, undefinable disease-free interval. Because of its relative rarity and the dispersion of cases, the possible genetic alterations implicated in the invasive and metastatic behaviour of this ocular neoplasm have not yet been characterized. The aim of this immunohistochemical retrospective study was to assess the expression of nm23 gene product, proposed to be a metastasis-suppressor gene, in uveal melanoma and to analyse its prognostic significance in relation to the various conventional histopathological parameters, currently considered the major prognostic indicators in this intra-ocular neoplasm.

Hunter syndrome is a lethal lysosomal storage disorder caused by the deficiency of iduronate-2-sulfatase and characterized by severe skeletal and neurological symptoms. Only symptomatic treatments are available and, although bone marrow transplantation has been suggested, no encouraging results have been obtained so far. Therefore, gene therapy might be a route to be pursued for treatment of the disease.

Bile acids have been proposed to exert immunological effects of potential pathogenic or therapeutic relevance, yet the experimental evidence remains preliminary. We reexamined the effects of a variety of bile salts with differing hydrophilic-hydrophobic properties on the production of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha) from monocytes and Kupffer cells. Monocytes from healthy human donors and Kupffer cells from 5-week-old mice were incubated for up to 18 hours with or without varying concentrations of bile salts and lipopolysaccharide (LPS).

This study investigates the effects of cysteamine alone and in association with zidovudine or didanosine on the replication of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). More than 90% viral inhibition was obtained by 200 microM cysteamine in lymphocytes and 100 microM cysteamine in macrophages against 4 primary isolates and 2 laboratory strains of HIV-1. Polymerase chain reaction analysis demonstrated that cysteamine interferes with early steps of HIV-1 replication, before proviral DNA formation.

The basis of the cytopathic effect induced by a laboratory strain and several clinical isolates of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in human macrophages cultured in the presence of macrophage colony-stimulating factor was studied. Infected macrophages die of necrosis, the consequence of the production of mature virions in infected cells. Cell death can be prevented by antiviral compounds that interfere with the assembly and budding of virions.

The available methods for the exact calculation of centre thickness presuppose that one knows simultaneously both surfaces of the lens and that the lens' power is determined afterwards. However, this approach is of secondary importance in practical situations. The issue in daily practice is the determination of the centre thickness of lenses that already have explicit vertex powers.

Angiofollicular lymph node hyperplasia, or Castleman's disease, is a condition of uncertain cause usually presenting with mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Occasionally other lymph node groups may be involved with or without associated systemic manifestations. A case of Castleman's disease involving parotid lymph nodes is reported in a 16-year-old female patient who presented with a painless swelling that initially was noticed at the age of 3 years.

The Aspergillus terreus gla1 gene, coding for a glucoamylase, has been cloned by heterologous hybridization. The gene is interrupted by four introns and encodes a protein with an N-terminal catalytic domain and a C-terminal starch-binding domain. The expression of the gene is induced by starch and maltose and repressed by glucose.

The effects of macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) on CD4 receptor expression, susceptibility to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV) infection, and anti-HIV activity of dextran sulfate and soluble-CD4 were studied in cultured, human primary macrophages. M-CSF stimulated macrophage cells to express the CD4 receptor, and this resulted in an increase of both the number of CD4+ cells and the density of the receptor on the cell surface. M-CSF also significantly enhanced the susceptibility of macrophage cells to HIV infection.
