Mitral regurgitation is a common valvular heart disease with increasing prevalence due to the aging population. In degenerative (primary) mitral regurgitation, medical therapies are limited and the mainstay of treatment is mitral valve surgery. Patients are referred for mitral valve surgery based on the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association guidelines, which recommend surgery in patients with severe mitral regurgitation.

The metal binding peptides (MBP-1, MBP-2) SVSVGMKPSPRP and WDPPTLKRPVSP were selected via phage display and combined with laminin-5 or E-cadherin epithelial cell specific peptides (CSP-1, CSP-2) to engineer four metal-cell specific peptides (MCSPs).

The relationship between mitral regurgitant severity, symptoms, and exercise capacity in primary degenerative mitral regurgitation.

Although it is assumed that more severe MR is associated with a greater burden of symptoms and lower exercise capacity, the relationship between symptoms, exercise capacity, and mitral regurgitant severity has not been well studied. We prospectively studied 67 (63 ± 11 years, 72% male) patients with at least mild degenerative MR and left ventricular ejection fraction ≥ 50% who underwent stress echocardiography, CMR, and evaluation with the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy questionnaire (KCCQ). Symptoms and exercise capacity were evaluated in the context of MR severity.

Association between Hyperglycemia and Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ).

Background: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a type of jawbone necrosis caused by the use of drugs for some types of cancer and osteoporosis. The current study aimed to evaluate the associations between hyperglycemia and the development of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.

Nowadays, morphology and molecular analyses at the single-cell level have a fundamental role in understanding biology better. These methods are utilized for cell phenotyping and in-depth studies of cellular processes, such as mitosis. Fluorescence microscopy and optical spectroscopy techniques, including Raman micro-spectroscopy, allow researchers to examine biological samples at the single-cell level in a non-destructive manner.

Presence of SARS-CoV-2 on the conjunctival mucosa in patients hospitalized due to COVID-19: Pathophysiological considerations and therapeutic implications.

Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) resulted in a worldwide pandemic, due to its great capacity to invade the human body. Previous studies have shown that the primary route of invasion of this virus is the human respiratory tract via the co-expression of ACE2 receptor and TMPRSS2, a serine protease on the cellular surface. Interestingly, this condition is present not only on the respiratory epithelium but on the conjunctival mucosa, as well.

The Utilisation of CAD/CAM Technology Amongst Austrian Dentists: A Pilot Study.

Objective: Computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) technology in dentistry has become noticeably more significant in recent years. The further development of CAD/CAM systems has led to a broader range of applications, more user-friendly operation, and improved accessibility. The present online survey aimed to investigate CAD/CAM technology utilisation amongst Austrian dentists as the first social media pilot study from Europe on this specific topic.

Background/aim: This study aimed to investigate the link between preoperative glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels and oral cancer patients and diabetes mellitus (DM). We aimed to highlight the importance of point-of-care HbA1c measurements in oral cancer patients.

Patients And Methods: A total of 214 patients were admitted to the Department of Inpatient Care at Semmelweis University's Department of Oromaxillofacial Surgery and Stomatology between 1 September 2020 and 21 May 2021; individuals, who had undergone maxillofacial surgery under general anesthesia, were included in the study.

Extension of the Gibbs-Duhem Equation to the Partial Molar Surface Thermodynamic Properties of Solutions.

In this paper, the Gibbs-Duhem equation is extended to the partial molar surface thermodynamic properties of solutions. According to the surface Gibbs-Duhem equations, the sum of the mole fractions of the components in the surface region of a bulk solution multiplied by different partial molar surface quantities should equal zero if summation is taken by all components of the solution. There are four different partial molar surface quantities identified in this paper for which the surface Gibbs-Duhem equation is proven to be valid: (i) the reduced surface chemical potential, (ii) the surface chemical potential, (iii) the partial molar surface area, and (iv) the partial molar excess surface Gibbs energy = the product of partial molar surface area and the partial surface tension.

Objectives: This study aimed to collect information about oral health knowledge and the habits of people living with diabetes (PwD), primarily type 1 diabetes, using the newly developed World Health Organisation Oral Health Questionnaire for Adults (Annex 7).

Despite of advances in modern therapeutics, one of the most feared complications of cancer are brain metastases, which often cause life impairing profound neurological symptoms and premature death. Breast adenocarcinoma is among the leading "sources" of brain metastases. Since the central nervous system lacks a classical lymphatic circulation, invading metastatic cells can reach the brain parenchyma only through haematogenous routes and must breach the blood-brain barrier (BBB).
