Introduction: Early increases in muscle strength following unilateral resistance training are typically accompanied by strength gains in the contralateral untrained muscles, a phenomenon known as cross-education. However, the specific motor unit adaptations responsible for this gain transfer remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we recorded myoelectrical activity from the biceps brachii using high-density electromyography.

Purpose: To train and validate KB prediction models by merging a large multi-institutional cohort of whole breast irradiation (WBI) plans using tangential fields.

Methods: Ten institutions (INST1-INST10, 1481 patients) developed their KB-institutional models for left/right WBI (ten models for right and eight models for left). The transferability of models among centers was assessed based on the overlap of the geometric Principal Component (PC1) of each model when applied to other institutions and/or on the presence of significantly different optimization policies.

The endothelin-B receptor (ETR) mediates vasodilation in young women, an effect that is absent in postmenopausal women. We have previously demonstrated that ETR-mediated vasodilation is regulated by estradiol (E) in young women; however, the impact of E on ETR function in postmenopausal women remains unknown. Accordingly, the objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that E exposure restores ETR-mediated dilation in postmenopausal women.

For individuals with motor complete spinal cord injury (SCI), previous works have shown that spared motor neurons below the injury level can still be voluntarily controlled. In this study, we investigated the behavior of these neurons after SCI by analyzing neural and spatial properties of individual motor units using high-density surface electromyography (HDsEMG) and ultrasound imaging. The dataset for this study is based on motor unit data from our previous work (Oliveira et al.

We propose an integral model describing an epidemic of an infectious disease. The model is behavioural in the sense that the force of infection includes the information index that describes the opinion-driven human behavioural changes. The information index contains a memory kernel to mimic how the individuals maintain memory of the past values of the infection.

Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) are at the core of all key biological processes. However, the complexity of the structural features that determine PPIs makes their design challenging. We present BindCraft, an open-source and automated pipeline for protein binder design with experimental success rates of 10-100%.

Claudins are a 27-member protein family that form and fortify specialized cell contacts in endothelium and epithelium called tight junctions. Tight junctions restrict paracellular transport across tissues by forming molecular barriers between cells. Claudin-binding molecules thus hold promise for modulating tight junction permeability to deliver drugs or as therapeutics to treat tight junction-linked disease.

Probabilistic tsunami hazard analysis (PTHA) introduces potential biases in tsunami risk assessment if it assumes static coastlines. Global warming, in addition to geological and local factors, may affect sea-level rise in the next few decades. Here, we provide a method that integrates the expected sea-level rise into existing PTHA, updating regional models without further tsunami simulations.

Though similar motor unit (MU) discharge properties have been observed during slow sustained contractions between chronically strength-trained (ST) and untrained (UT) individuals, it is currently unknown whether differences between these groups exist for when maximal in vivo MU discharge rate is assessed during rapid, maximal rate of force development (RFD) contractions. Therefore, we compared MU discharge characteristics and RFD during rapid contractions in chronic ST and UT individuals. The investigations were performed in two independent cohorts of chronically ST men, with trained elbow flexors (, = 13, 6 ± 4 yr of training experience) or knee extensors (, = 11, 9 ± 4 yr of experience), and compared with those of UT ( = 12 and = 10, respectively).

Sore throat represents one of the main causes of antibiotic overprescription in children. Its management is still a matter of debate, with countries considering streptococcal pharyngotonsillitis a benign and self-limiting condition and others advocating for its antibiotic treatment to prevent suppurative complications and acute rheumatic fever. Italian paediatricians frequently prescribe antibiotics on a clinical basis regardless of microbiological results.

Introduction: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) represents an established interventional pain therapeutic; however, the SCS effects of SCS waveforms on motor neuron recruitment of the lower limbs of chronic pain patients remain largely unknown.

Methods: We investigated these effects by performing isometric ankle-dorsal flexions at varying force levels under four SCS conditions: SCS Off (1 week), burst SCS (40 Hz), SCS Off (acute), and tonic SCS (130 Hz). Muscle activity was recorded via high-density surface electromyography (64-electrode grid) on the tibialis anterior muscle.

Clostridium perfringens enterotoxin (CpE) causes prevalent and deadly gastrointestinal disorders. CpE binds to receptors called claudins on the apical surfaces of small intestinal epithelium. Claudins normally regulate paracellular transport but are hijacked from doing so by CpE and are instead led to form claudin/CpE complexes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at how serious Human Adenovirus (HAdV) infections are compared to other viral illnesses in kids with breathing problems in Italy.
  • They found that kids with HAdV showed more inflammation but didn't have worse breathing issues than those with other viruses.
  • The research highlights the need to identify HAdV early to avoid giving unnecessary antibiotics, since many kids might get treated for bacterial infections when they really have a virus.

Vascular dysfunction, marked by lower endothelial function and increased aortic stiffness, is a nontraditional risk factor that precedes the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the age at which these changes in vascular function occur in women and the degree to which reproductive hormones mediate these changes has not been characterized. Women free from major disease were enrolled across the adult life span (aged 18-70 yr, = 140).

Purpose: While cycling offers several health benefits, repetitive loading and maintenance of static postures for prolonged periods expose cyclists to low back pain (LBP). Despite high LBP prevalence in cyclists, underlying pathomechanics and specific lumbar region muscle activation patterns during cycling are unclear. Here, we compared lumbar erector spinae (ES) muscles activation and spatial distribution activity in cyclists with and without recent LBP history.

In myoelectric control, continuous estimation of multiple degrees of freedom has an important role. Most studies have focused on estimating discrete postures or forces of the human hand but for a practical prosthetic system, both should be considered. In daily life activities, hand postures vary for grasping different objects and the amount of force exerted on each fingertip depends on the shape and weight of the object.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the potential of using artificial intelligence (AI) to help individuals with motor-complete spinal cord injuries regain control over their hand movements by analyzing neural signals from spared spinal motor neurons.
  • By training a convolutional neural network with data from both uninjured and tetraplegic participants, the AI was able to accurately identify and differentiate various hand movements, achieving a high accuracy rate of 98.3% among the SCI group.
  • Findings indicate that the control of hand movements can be reliably estimated when their corresponding neural signals follow a specific elliptical pattern, supporting the development of assistive technologies such as exoskeletons and electrical stimulation devices.
