Finger systolic blood pressure during cooling was determined in 21 hypertensive, 22 diabetics and 18 control individuals. Blood pressure determination was made using a miniature tourniquet on the middle phalanx and a strain-gauge flow sensor on the finger tip. Pressure was measured at 35 degrees C and upon stepwise local cooling down to 5 degrees C.

A double-blind, randomized, crossover trial was carried out in 26 hypertensive patients to investigate the hypotensive effects of three different dosages of frusemide (40 mg, 60 mg, and 80 mg twice daily) and the effects on serum potassium and urinary output. The study included a 4-week treatment period with placebo, three periods of 6 weeks with frusemide, and an intervening placebo period of 4 weeks. The mean arterial blood pressure fell about 10 mmHg within the first 2 weeks and was independent of the frusemide dosage.

Radial segmentation of nuclei of lymphocytes from peripheral blood from 18 patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia was studied in heparinized blood samples incubated with and without oxalate, for 6 h, at 20 degrees C, and 37 degrees C. The yield of radially segmented nuclei was the same after incubation at 20 degrees C as at 37 degrees C. Treatment with sodium oxalate resulted in an increased formation of radial segmentation to the same extent at 20 degrees C as at 37 degrees C.
