In many crops, both pollination and biocontrol determine crop yield, whereby the relative importance of the two ecosystem services can be moderated by the landscape context. However, additive and interactive effects of pollination and biocontrol in different landscape contexts are still poorly understood. We examined both ecosystem services in South African macadamia orchards.

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection was first reported in 2015 in Brazil as causing microcephaly and other developmental abnormalities in newborns, leading to the identification of Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS). Viral infections have been considered an environmental risk factor for neurodevelopmental disorders outcome, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Moreover, not only the infection per se, but maternal immune system activation during pregnancy, has been linked to fetal neurodevelopmental disorders.

Article Synopsis
  • Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a severe neuromuscular disorder leading to muscle weakness and reduced life expectancy, with onasemnogene abeparvovec being the first approved gene therapy for it.
  • A study involving 41 SMA patients (mostly type 1) showed significant motor function improvement after gene therapy, with nearly half of the type 1 patients gaining the ability to sit independently.
  • Adverse effects were common, including liver enzyme elevation in 70.7% of patients and thrombocytopenia in 31.7%, while the presence of previous nusinersen treatment didn't further enhance motor function post-gene therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • * Two experiments compared the CFP of growing-finishing pigs of various sexes raised under different conditions, revealing that heavier pigs consistently had a higher CFP relative to their carcass growth and weight.
  • * A soy-free feed in the final phase showed that high slaughter weights can lead to lower sustainability unless low-CFP feed is used, indicating that feed choices play a vital role in mitigating environmental impact.

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection was first associated with Central Nervous System (CNS) infections in Brazil in 2015, correlated with an increased number of newborns with microcephaly, which ended up characterizing the Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS). Here, we investigated the impact of ZIKV infection on the functionality of iPSC-derived astrocytes. Besides, we extrapolated our findings to a Brazilian cohort of 136 CZS children and validated our results using a mouse model.
