Interstitial lung diseases are rare in pediatrics. They include dysfunctions in the metabolism of pulmonary surfactant, an amphipathic molecule that reduces surface tension and prevents alveolar collapse. Here we describe the case of a 6-month-old infant controlled for low weight, who presented with acute respiratory distress and cyanosis; his chest X-ray showed interstitial infiltrate, pneumomediastinum, and bilateral pneumothorax.

Some haematological diseases are associated to an increased risk of thromboembolic events. We report a case of paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH) in which a cerebrovascular event represented the first clinical manifestation of disease. PNH is associated to thromboembolic events, generally of venous districts often involving unusual locations such as mesenteric vessels, sagittal veins, inferior vena cava and renal veins.

Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive value of the respiratory changes in the transvalvular flow velocities to those of right atrial collapse and right ventricular collapse in the diagnosis of cardiac tamponade.

Methods: Standard two-dimensional and Doppler echocardiography were performed with respiratory monitoring in 56 consecutive patients with mild to severe pericardial effusion. Sixteen patients met the clinical criteria for cardiac tamponade and underwent pericardiocentesis or surgical drainage.

According to the data of the literature, the prevalence of pain in cancer patients at various stages of the disease and the settings of care range from 38 to 51%, with an increase of up to 74% in the advanced and terminal stages. Despite published World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for pain management, 42 to 51% of cancer patients receive inadequate analgesia and 30% receive no analgesics at all. A 3-year Research Project "Towards a Pain-free Hospital", which began one year ago, is ongoing at the National Cancer Institute of Milan.

In the present study, we show that a singly substituted peptide derived from the epitope MART1(27-35) and containing a Leu in position 1 (LAGIGILTV; 1L) behaves as a superagonist by in vitro inducing specific T cells with enhanced immunological functions. 1L-specific CTLs can be raised from peripheral blood of HLA-A2+ melanoma patients more efficiently than T cells specific for the cognate peptide. These T cells show a greater sensitivity to native MART1(27-35) when compared with CTL variable raised to parental peptide from the same patients.
