Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a very potent antioxidant derived from green tea, was compared with vitamin E in terms of its effects on antioxidant defense and immune response of rainbow trout, by means of a feeding trial of eight weeks. Two of the experimental diets were supplemented with EGCG at either 20 or 100 mg kg(-1) diet (which contained only 30% of the intended levels) and the third was provided with 100 mg kg(-1) vitamin E but not EGCG. The control diet was not supplemented with the test components.

The effects of vitamin E (deficiency or supplementation) on the non-specific immune system in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, were evaluated. Rainbow trout were fed daily a semi-purified diet supplemented with vitamin E at 0, 28 and 295 mg x kg(-1) of diet. After 80 days of experimental feeding, the phagocytic function (respiratory burst evaluated by the CL response, phagocytosis) from gut leucocytes and head kidney enriched macrophages was measured; head kidney cell pinocytosis and serum lysozyme activity were also analysed.

The effect of the organochlorine insecticide lindane (gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane) administered intraperitoneally at 10 or 50 mg/kg body wt on some major immune functions of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) was examined. Fish were fed vitamin C as ascorbate-2-polyphosphate at a basal level (60 mg ascorbic acid-(AA)-equivalent/kg of feed) or a high level (2000 mg AA-equivalent/kg) 1 month before lindane exposure and during the whole experiment. The aim of the experiment was to determine whether dietary vitamin C is able to prevent immunosuppression due to lindane.
