Cervicothoracic Emphysema After Nasotracheal Intubation Attempt: A Life-Threatening Complication-A Case Report.

Nasotracheal intubation is a commonly used technique in elective oral and pharyngeal surgeries. This case report details an incident involving a young adult patient in which an attempt at nasotracheal intubation resulted in a life-threatening cervicofacial and thoracic emphysema. Although complications associated with nasotracheal intubation are rare, their potential severity necessitates a comprehensive preprocedural discussion and risk assessment with the surgical team to confirm its appropriate indication for each individual patient.

Poor preoperative performance at Clock Drawing Test is associated with postoperative decline in olfaction in older patients: an observational pilot study.

Background: Decline in olfaction may occur after general anesthesia, but the exact incidence and underlying physiopathology remain scarcely investigated. Olfactory dysfunction arises with aging and is known to be linked to cognitive impairment. In this pilot study, we evaluated the incidence of immediate postoperative decline in olfaction and its association with a preoperative cognitive test, performance at Clock Drawing Test (CDT), in a group of older patients.

Olfactory Dysfunction Predicts Frailty and Poor Postoperative Outcome in Older Patients Scheduled for Elective Non-Cardiac Surgery.

Objectives: Frailty has been suggested to take part in the recently demonstrated link between olfactory dysfunction and overall mortality risk. Preoperative assessment of frailty is essential to detect the most vulnerable patients scheduled for surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether olfactory dysfunction is a reliable predictor of preoperative frailty and postoperative outcome.

Functional Imaging in Olfactory Disorders.

Purpose Of Review: The aim was to synthesize key findings regarding the use of functional MRI (fMRI) to assess olfactory dysfunction (OD), and thus, to evaluate whether fMRI could be a reliable clinical diagnostic tool.

Recent Findings: In response to olfactory stimulation, patients with quantitative OD display reduced activation in olfactory-related brain regions but also stronger activation in non-olfactory brain areas. Parosmic patients also seem to show both weaker and higher brain signals.

Combined Use of Rotational Thromboelastometry (Rotem) and Platelet Impedance Aggregometry (Multiplate Analyzer) in Cyanotic and Acyanotic Infants and Children Undergoing Cardiac Surgery With Cardiopulmonary Bypass: Subgroup Analysis of a Randomized Clinical Trial.

Objectives: Few studies have investigated the Multiplate platelet function analyzer in pediatrics. The authors evaluated Multiplate combined with Rotem in terms of guiding platelet transfusion after pediatric cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The authors further compared coagulation parameters between cyanotic and acyanotic patients.
