Article Synopsis
  • UNESCO biosphere reserves aim to promote sustainable development by balancing biodiversity conservation and socio-economic growth, yet there's a need for deeper insight into their actual impacts on local economies.
  • A systematic review analyzed 16 studies on biosphere reserves after screening 10,053 titles; findings indicate mixed effects on economic living standards and varying validity among studies.
  • Most high-validity studies suggest positive relationships between local communities and governance after interventions, although some studies highlight potential for both conflict and benefits in socio-economic outcomes.

Background: The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recommend the consumption of less than 2,000 mg of sodium/day to reduce blood pressure and the risk of conditions such as cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease. The sodium intake among Vietnamese was reported to be 7,200 mg/d or more. Free L-glutamate enhances flavor when it is added to food and improves the taste of sodium-reduced foods.

Methods: This prospective, open-label, observational study was conducted in a university hospital.

Essential oils are promising as environmentally friendly and safe sources of pesticides for human use. Furthermore, they are also of interest as aromatherapeutic agents in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, and inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) has been evaluated as an important mechanism. The essential oils of some species in the genera , , and of the family Lamiaceae were evaluated for inhibition of electric eel AChE using the Ellman method.

Article Synopsis
  • Vietnam is facing a growing issue with antimicrobial resistance, particularly with carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), and the study aimed to assess the prevalence in non-hospitalized humans and animals in the Mekong Delta.
  • The research involved sampling healthy humans and various farm animals, revealing a low prevalence of CRE and CRAB among them, with higher levels found in individuals who recently used antibiotics.
  • Results showed that a specific strain of CRKP was linked to a hospital outbreak, indicating the risk of transferring these resistant bacteria between health care settings and the general community.
