Demographic aging of the population determines the need for the development of geriatric component in the work of medical services. In this regard, we have proved promising development of Gerontology and Geriatrics in Kazakhstan, the results of analysis of the existing system of care for the elderly persons and identify ways to improve towards rehabilitation help, long-term care for people over 80 years old, geriatric medical training and the creation of a scientific school of Gerontology and geriatrics.

Based on the epidemiological survey and materials on hospitalization of pensionable population in different regions of Ukraine real medical services requirements were determined for this category of population. 43.3% of urban population older than those capable of working need to be kept under continuous medical surveillance, the same being true of 37.

The article provides research data on the age-related peculiarities of morbidity and reviews issues pertaining to the quality of medical services for the older age groups of workers including the rational use of drug therapy. Specified are the requirements of this particular age group in special medical care. A major aspect in the improvement of health care for workers beyond forty lies in substantial geriatric training of shop physicians.

On the basis of analysing the state of health care delivery for the elderly and aged population at prehospital stage (provided by emergency care service and district polyclinic) in big cities with a high level of aging of the population, a number of organizational activities for improving health care delivery for this group of population has been suggested. The data on peculiarities in the level, structure and nature of emergency care visits by elderly population are provided. The reasons for the irrational use of emergency care are discussed.
