The pathogenesis of Charcot foot is based on three disputed factors: (1) loss of neurotrophic influence, (2) microtraumatic lesions, and (3) neurovascular disturbances. These etiological causes were uncovered by clinicophysiological tests. However, no results of quantitative nerve density studies of sympathetic and sensory substance P-positive (SP+) nerve fibers are available.

Comparing results of extirpation of the thyroid gland with those obtained at cutting tissues without extirpation of the gland in 1.5--2-month-old pigs of both sex, it was possible to reveal that there are numerous sources of afferent innervation of the thyroid gland in these animals. They include the distal ganglion of the vagus nerve and the cerebrospinal ganglia C1-C6.
