The micellar solubilization of naphthalene from its saturated aqueous solutions using the biosurfactant rhamnolipid was studied. Using the NMR diffusion method, selective measurements of the self-diffusion coefficients of molecules of all components of the solution-naphthalene, rhamnolipid, and water-were carried out at various rhamnolipid concentrations from 0.06 to 100 g/L.

Article Synopsis
  • - Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has become a leading noncommunicable disease worldwide, contributing significantly to illness and death rates.
  • - Recent advancements in how we understand, diagnose, and treat COPD, including the use of effective drug combinations and non-medication methods, have changed the management of the condition.
  • - These updates reflect a new approach in clinical practice for diagnosing and treating COPD, emphasizing the importance of both medication and lifestyle changes.

The non-competitive NMDA glutamate receptor antagonist memantine has neuroprotective properties and is the first non-cholinergic drug approved for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The purpose of this work was to test the hypothesis that injections of memantine to healthy animals can affect the subunit composition of NMDA receptors in the brain, which may explain the effects of its chronic administration. For this, the expression of subunits GluN1, GluN2A, GluN2B, and GluN2C was studied in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex of rats after single or five subchronic injections of memantine.

The cellular mechanisms of neuroplastic changes in the structure of motoneurons and neuropils of the oculomotor (III) nuclei in mice after a 30-day space flight and 7 days after landing were studied. The results showed that microgravity caused degenerative phenomena in neurons: a decrease in the number of terminal dendritic branches was found both after flight and after readaptation to Earth's gravity. In mice after the flight, the number of axodendritic synapses was less than in the control, and their number was not restored after the readaptation.

Selective measurements of the self-diffusion coefficients of molecules of the biological surfactant rhamnolipid (RL) in individual aqueous solutions and in solutions with phenol as a solubilizate were carried out by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) diffusometry. Based on the obtained results, the solubilization characteristics of RLs were calculated. They are the fraction of solubilized phenol molecules, the phenol micelle-water distribution coefficient, the molar solubilization coefficient, the hydrodynamic radii of RL monomers and micelles, the aggregation numbers of micelles, and the solubilization capacity of micelles.
