Article Synopsis
  • Floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) are being studied for their effectiveness in cleaning polluted water and enhancing urban landscapes, with a focus on whether aeration can improve their performance.
  • The research compared FTWs with and without aeration, using plant species and measuring the removal efficiency of contaminants like COD and NH-N, while varying air flow rates in the aerated tanks.
  • Results showed that aeration significantly increased the removal rates of pollutants (up to 99%) and boosted plant growth rates, with the aerated FTWs demonstrating nearly a two-fold increase in growth compared to non-aerated ones.

Current methods for measuring microplastic fibres (MPF) are cumbersome, time consuming and unscalable for routine high throughput analysis. This study reports a method for rapidly extracting, quantifying and analysing MPFs in laundry wastewater with several key improvements which vastly enhance overall efficiency and scalability of analysis. FT-IR surveying is employed as a preliminary step in analysis to quickly determine what polymers are present in a sample prior to fluorescence treatment.

The interplay between CO input and light intensity is investigated to provide new insight to optimise microalgae growth rate in photobioreactors for environmental remediation, carbon capture, and biomass production. Little is known about the combined effect of carbon metabolism and light intensity on microalgae growth. In this study, carbonated water was transferred to the microalgae culture at different rates and under different light intensities for observing the carbon composition and growth rate.

Article Synopsis
  • * The average organic removal rates were significantly higher for rMBR-0.46 (823 mgCOD/gVSS.d) and rMBR-0.3 (397 mgCOD/gVSS.d) compared to the conventional MBR (295 mgCOD/gVSS.d), and nitrogen removal improved in the rMBR phases due to the anoxic conditions.
  • * The fouling rate was initially

The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused hundreds of millions of cases and millions of deaths, resulting in the development of COVID-19 phobia. To prevent getting COVID-19, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in many countries encourage people to protect themselves via several strategies, such as wearing face masks or using sanitizers when washing hands. However, at times, such supplies for preventing COVID-19 are limited.
