Resection of large anterior midline skull base meningiomas with extensive peritumoral edema poses high risks due to postoperative edema decompensation leading to increased intracranial pressure. Initial craniectomy prevents intracranial pressure decompensation but requires secondary cranioplasty. This study compares single-stage osteoplastic craniotomy with tumor resection to a two-stage approach using bifrontal craniectomy, tumor resection and subsequent cranioplasty after edema recovery in a second surgical step.

This is the unusual case of concurrent late-onset sepsis caused by enteroviruses in preterm quadruplets in a neonatal ward. While viral infections are an important differential diagnosis of bacterial sepsis in the outpatient setting, the occurrence in a neonatal ward with strict prophylactic hygiene measures is unusual. In this case, transmission of enteroviruses via breast milk appears possible.

The current literature and daily practice reveal variations on patient head positioning for this procedure with both rigid fixations in the Mayfield skull clamp as well as use of a padded headrest being used. In this study, we therefore examine whether patients undergoing surgery using head positioning in the Mayfield skull clamp versus a padded headrest differ in regard to adverse events, surgical parameters and clinical outcome.

It has been shown that radiologic classification of hypothalamic invasion can effectively predict surgical strategies to minimize postoperative comorbidities in pediatric patients. However, no comparative analysis has been performed in adult patients with craniopharyngioma.
